Einband berieben. - Tableaux de huit siècles brings together works from eight centuries of French literature, thereby departing from the practice of restricting second- and third-semester students to a routine diet of nineteenth- and twentieth-century fiction. In compiling the reader, the editor chose selections that, while not too difficult for the undergraduate, had enough substance to capture and hold the interest both of the prospective language major and of the student taking the course merely to satisfy a language requirement. The selections introduce the literary, cultural, and historical traditions of France. Each century represented, from the Middle Ages to the present, offers the same categories: a collection of proverbs or maxims (Pensées diverses); an excerpt from a play (Theatre); a short story (Conte); a historical passage (Texte historique); a scientific selection (Texte scientifique); a philosophic or didactic passage (Texte philosophique); a letter (Lettre); and a group of poems (Poèmes). Occasionally this pattern is stretched to include an unusual piece or two, such as the lettre persane under Lettre and the several mémoires m the category Texte historique.
