Cet ouvrage décrit et analyse le contexte symbolique les modalités quotidiennes et les aspects rituels des relations entre les hommes et les femmes chez les Ankave une…société d'horticulteurs forestiers du centre de la Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée. Cette première étude d'un groupe anga des basses terres permet également une comparaison avec d'autres Anga (Baruya et Sambia) qui révèle de profonds contrastes dans les organisations sociales de cette région. Chez les Ankave les représentations du corps et celles des éléments du monde végétal et animal associés aux substances qu'il produit et excrète sous-tendent et relient plusieurs domaines de la réalité sociale. En particulier on attribue aux substances féminines - et notamment au sang dont les mères nourrissent le foetus - un rôle primordial dans la procréation et la croissance des êtres humains auquel font écho un antagonisme sexuel moins marqué que chez d'autres groupes anga la forme des échanges qui ponctuent les étapes du cycle de vie et diverses particularités du système de parenté. Ces représentations de la gestation et de la naissance modèlent également les initiations masculines. Comme souvent en Nouvelle-Guinée celles-ci répondent au souci de transformer les garçons en adultes - et autrefois en guerriers - tout en établissant l'asymétrie des rapports entre les sexes. Mais alors que plusieurs groupes anga attribuent au sperme la capacité de faire croître les initiés lors de pratiques homosexuelles ritualisées c'est le jus du pandanus rouge un substitut végétal du sang que les Ankave mettent au centre des rites masculins. A propos de l'auteur : PASCALE BONNEMÈRE est chargée de recherche au CNRS (Centre de recherche et de documentation sur l'Océanie Marseille).
