Bibliography: Olschki, Theologia, 999 This book contains the Annales Ecclesiastici (full title Annales ecclesiastici a Christo nato ad annum 1198) which was first published between 1588 and 1607 and consisting of twelve folio volumes. It is a history of the first 12 centuries of the Christian Church and it was written by the Italian cardinal Caesar Baronius (1538 1607). Baronius is best known for this work, which was undertaken at the request of Philip Neri as an answer to the anti-Catholic history, the Magdeburg Centuries. In the engraved title page are depicted, against a classical architectural background, St Peter and St Paul (characterised by their typical attributes: the keys and the book and the sword) standing on two columns decorated by cornucopias and small putti. The Virgin and Child are depicted above the Saints inside a stemma held by two winged angels. At the feet of the Saints is represented a personification of the Church, holding a cross and papal regalia, with the chained personifications of Heresy (on the left) as an old woman with sagging breasts holding two snakes, and Paganism (on the right), in the guise a man in roman military costume. The author is depicted, in a separate full-page engraving, while at work in in his study, surrounded by books and with a window open on the Italian countryside and a church, possibly Santa Maria in Vallicella where Baronius lectured for three decades and where he died and where he is now buried.

It was first published between 1588 and 1607 as a response to the Lutheran… Historia Ecclesiae Christi (History of the Church of Christ) in which the Magdeburg theologians surveyed the history of the church in order to demonstrate how the Catholic Church represented the Antichrist and had deviated from the beliefs and practices of the early church.Long before Baronius was appointed Librarian of the Vatican in 1597, he had access to material and sources in its archives that were previously unpublished or unused. He used these in the development of his work. Accordingly, Annales Ecclesiastici is considered by most as extremely useful and complete. The eminent historian Lord Acton called it "the greatest history of the Church ever written."He began writing this account of the Church after nearly thirty years of lecturing at Santa Maria in Vallicella. Reliure de l'époque de pleine basane glacée blonde, larges armes dorées frappées au centre d'un ovale sur chacun des plats…, dos à nerfs orné de filets gras à froid, filet doré sur les nerfs, doubles caissons d'encadrement dorés, lesquels s'ornent en leur centre du chiffre doré de de Thou, les caissons de tête et de queue sont en outre occupés par un décor de petits filets obliques et verticaux, abeille héraldique dorée frappée au caisson supérieur. Exemplaire aux armes d'alliance de Jacques-Auguste de Thou et de sa seconde épouse Gasparde de La Châtre, frappées au centre de chacun des plats. ''De Thou disposait d'une magnifique bibliothèque, d'une admirable collection''. (in Brunet). ''Magistrat, homme d'État, juriste, historien, humaniste et bibliophile, Jacques-Auguste de Thou (1553-1617) est une des figures les plus marquantes parmi les collectionneurs de livres de son temps. La bibliothèque savante et encyclopédique qu'il avait réunie à la collection de son père, Christophe de Thou, riche d'environ mille manuscrits et huit mille volumes imprimés, demeura sans rivale à Paris jusqu'au milieu du XVIIe siècle. Instrument de travail de l'historien et juriste, sa bibliothèque était également ouverte aux lettrés, humanistes et étudiants de la France et de l'étranger. Très exigeant sur la condition de ses livres, de Thou les faisait relier avec le plus grand soin, d'abord en vélin, puis en maroquin rouge, citron, vert ou violet, de la plus belle qualité, frappé de son chiffre et de ses armes.'' (Alde). ''Le Cardinal Baronius devint en 1593 général de la Congrégation de l'Oratoire en Italie et fut choisi par le Pape Clément VIII pour être son confesseur. Il fut nommé en 1596 Cardinale t conservateur de la bibliothèque du Vatican. Personnage important de la Contre-Réforme catholique, il faillit devenir Pape par deux fois''. Outre une page de titre agrémentée d'une large vignette gravée, l'ouvrage recèle un joli frontispice. Quelques altérations superficielles affectant la reliure ; quoique davantage marquées au second plat. Feuillets parfois oxydés. Présence de quelques rousseurs ou petites tâches éparses dans le corps d'ouvrage. De très rares feuillets sont légèrement effrangés. Nonobstant, bonne condition.

Rare, very good complete set (internally sound and with minor damages to spines mainly) of one of the best editions, prefered by many scolars (See Graesse) of this landmark of historical scolarship (Cf. Biogr.-Bibl. Kirchenlex.). Baronius, cardinal and ecclesiastical historian, born at Sora in the Kingdom of Naples, 1538 died at Rome 1607. His "Annales Ecclesiastici", mark an epoch in historiography and merited for its author, after Eusebius, the title of a Father of Ecclesiastical History. It is a classic of Counter-Reformation scholarship--an effort to show that the true church had always been Catholic - albeit its weaknesses of research and criticism of sources. The first volume appeared in 1588 and was universally acclaimed for its surprising wealth of information, its splendid erudition, and its timely vindication of papal claims. More impressive was the truly phenomenal sale the book secured and the immediate demand for its translation into the principal European languages. It was Baronius' intention to produce a volume every year; but the second was not ready until early in 1590. The next four appeared yearly, the seventh late in 1596, the other five at still-longer intervals, up to 1607, when, just before his death, he completed the twelfth volume, which he had foreseen in a vision would be the term of his work. It brought the history down to 1198, the year of the accession of Innocent III. The "Annals" remained the inspiration of students of history for three centuries and an inexhaustible storehouse for research. No one work has treated so completely the epoch with which they deal. Nowhere are there to be found collected so many important documents. Unbiased scholars recognize in them the foundation-stone of true historical science, and in their author the qualities of the model historian: indefatigable diligence in research, passion for verification, accuracy of judgment, and unswerving loyalty to truth. Despite this care, Baronio cited many documents as authentic which a more enlightened criticism has rejected as apocryphal. His most serious defects were incident to the very accuracy he essayed in casting his history in the strictly annalistic form. The attempt to assign to each successive year its own events involved him in numerous chronological errors. To the original twelve volumes of the "Annals", there have been added continuations in the style of Baronius. The most worthy are those of the Oratorians Raynaldus, ablest of the continuators, who - with material accumulated by Baronius - carried the history to the year 1565 (Rome, 1646-77, 9 vols.) and Laderchi, who continued it thence to 1571 (Rome, 1728-37, 3 vols.). The best editions (Cath. Encycl.) of Baronius are our set, Lucca (1738-59, 38 vols.) and Bar-le-Duc (1864-83, 37 vols.); the former contains the continuations of Raynald, the critique of Pagi and others, and is enriched by the notes of Archbishop Mansi. The folded plate which is mentioned for the set in Oxford Univ. Library, does not show in our copy of the apparatus volume. General condition of the volumes (detailed bibliographical description and defects per volume on request): Occasional paperspotting and browning, damage to some labels; pages somewhat wrinkled; wormholes in spine, and inner margins; Damages and wormholes to the vellum on spine of several volumes, some with (residue of) old repairs; but all volumes are still firm and sound and in all they present a very good impressive set folios of a rare standard work.
