Ben's personal journal entries begin when he buys a voice-recognition device that can translate his words into clean text for his eighteenth birthday. The entries are revealed in reverse order so that the first one encountered is the one he makes on his granddaughter's eighteenth birthday in 2101. Along the way, we learn how technologies have affected people such as Ben but, in the end, have done little to enhance their lives.Dr. Nilo's only legally recognized child, Susannah, is the product of the process he developed with the aid of Arthur to perfect humans. Susannah's story describes the six months in 2083 leading to the birth of Ben's granddaughter and Arthur's murder. She has been kept in the dark about being a C Square, a person whose two gametes were chosen by Arthur to meet specific criteria aimed at creating a perfected human being. Susannah ultimately learns her true heritage and identity just as it becomes impossible for her to access the resources she would need to fully understand her place as a second Eve.The same themes in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein frame the whole: the consequences of humans using technological methods that circumvent nature; the futility of technological progress as a substitute for human development; and the alienation of creations from their creators, even when those creations are biological children, and their creator is an unknown parent. The story concludes with Arthur telling the teenager that humans create gods who they say created them. Gods do not have the power to create anything. However, they can be omniscient and therefore far beyond the capacity of their human creators, just as Arthur is.

Prima edizione francese rara di questo celebre scritto del noto filosofo e…polemista inglese, Antoine Collins (- Londra 1729), considerato da Voltaire come uno dei più strenui nemici della religione cristiana. L'opera in realtà più che una vera e propria opera di Collins, è una rilettura della stessa elaborata dal celeberrimo filosofo, enciclopedista illuminista, traduttore e divulgatore scientifico tedesco, naturalizzato francese, il Barone Paul Henri Thiry d'Holbach, nome francesizzato di Paul Heinrich Dietrich, barone di (von) Holbach (Edesheim, 8 dicembre 1723 Parigi, 21 febbraio 1789) che fu tra i massimi esponenti dell'Illuminismo e dell'ateismo. Scriveva ad esempio Voltaire di Collins: "Un des plus terribles ennemies de la religion chretienne a ete Antoine Collins, grand tesorier de la region d'Essex, bon metaphysicien, et d'une grande erudition. Il est triste qu'il n'ait fait usage de sa profonde dialectique que contre le christianisme [] Les recherches philosophique sur là liberté de l'homme, sur les fondements de la religion chretienne, sur les propheties litterales, sur la liberté de penser, sont malheuresement des ouvrages victorieux". Tale era l'apprezzamento di Voltaire per il lavoro di Collins che si sa che il celebre illuminista possedeva quattro titoli dell'autore inglese, nella sua biblioteca pietroburghese (due dei titoli sono anche fittamente annotati da Voltaire). D'Holbach come Voltaire apprezzò molto il lavoro di Collins tanto che nel 1770 tradusse anche "L'Esprit du judaïsme". E' da ricordare che l'argomento della traduzione qui presentata, non era nuovo per d'Holbach che era stato colui che in Francia aveva reso noto un celeberrimo manoscritto mai pubblicato, dal titolo "Israël vengé ou Exposition naturelle des prophéties hébraïques que les chrétiens appliquent à Jésus, leur prétendu Messie", del grande filosofo ebreo Balthazar (Isaac) Orobio de Castro (c.1617 in Bragança, Portugal November 7, 1687 in Amsterdam) che in parte trattava argomenti poi recuperati dallo stesso Collins attento conoscitore della filosofia ebraica ed in parte anche da d'Holbach nel 1761, nel suo "Le Christianisme dévoilé ou Examen des Principes & des Effets de la Religion chretienne". D'Holbach nella traduzione francese dell'opera di Collins ricostruì le posizioni del filosofo inglese contro le interpretazioni cristiane delle profezie in una sintesi di "Ground ad Reason" e di "Scheme of Litteral Prophecy". L'opera di Collins, uscita, per ragioni chiare, spesso anonima, ebbe grande risonanza nel settecento in tutto il continente europeo anche se furono fortemente osteggiate in Germania ed Olanda. Basti ad esempio ricordare che ad esempio, 1755 Padre Bonifazio Bonetti, dell'ordine dei Predicatori, intratteneva spesso i confratelli con i suoi "Ragionamenti" scritti per confutare le obiezioni del "noto anonimo inglese" (come erano soliti molti riferirsi a Collins e alla sua opera, a volte per vera e propria ignoranza dell'autore delle stesse) nello "Scheme of Litteral Prophecy considered". L'attribuzione dell'opera frnacese a d'Holbach fu a lungo disquisita, fino a quando fu recuperata una lettera scritta da Diderot a Sophie Volland del 1768 nella quale Diderot, svelava, senza ombra di dubbio, il nome dell'autore.
