Fort volume in-12, basane marbrée, dos orné, tranches rouges . Sabin, n°38634.

Lahontan came to New France in 1683 as captain of a regiment which he led in expeditions against the Iroquois. He travelled west in 1687 with Duluth and was given command of Fort St. Joseph on the St. Clair River. He left this post in 1688, venturing further west by the Fox-Wisconsin portage and reached the upper Mississippi. His work is considered one of the first comprehensive descriptions of the western part of the continent.…

2 Volumes. 8vo. pp. 12 p.l., 280; 304. 4 engraved maps (2 large & folding) & 16 engraved plates (6 folding). woodcut tailpieces. A near fine copy in full polished calf by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, all edges gilt (slightly rubbed). armorial bookplate of Charles Edward Sanborn. Second Edition of the English Translation, the Osborn Issue. Lahontan was only sixteen years of age when he first arrived in New France in 1683, as an officer in the colonial irregular troops. During the next ten years, he saw active service in the sieur de La Barre's expedition against the Iroquois in 1684, in the Marquis Denonville's campaign against the Senecas in 1687, and in numerous skirmishes with the English. In 1693 he was appointed King's lieutenant in Plaisance (Placentia), Newfoundland, but his career came to an abrupt end when he was accused of insubordination by the governor of Newfoundland, Jacques François de Brouillan. Lahontan fled to Portugal and spent the rest of his life in wandering exile, chiefly in Germany and Holland. Lahontan's account, based on the daily journals which he kept during his stay in New France, gained such immense popularity that no less than twenty-five legitimate and pirated editions were issued within sixty years of its first publication in 1703. Next to Hennepin's, Lahontan's was the most widely read North American travel narrative of the period. Despite the exposure by Charlevoix and Bellin of the fictitious nature of Lahontan's voyage up the 'Long River' in the winter of 1688-89, which seriously discredited the work, its overall authenticity is now generally acknowledged. "In topography, geography, ethnology, and natural history, all of it the record of personal knowledge, Lahontan's work stands as one of the most important sources for the intimate study of New France." (R.G.Thwaites) The vivid and lively descriptions of New France, its social and political life, the manners and customs of the First Nations and their method of warfare, are further enhanced by Lahontain's philosophical views. His notions about Christian dogmatism and the vices of European society which he contrasts with the virtues of the 'noble savage', presaged the work of Swift, Rousseau, and Voltaire. At the end is a vocabulary of the Algonquin language. The majority of the engravings depict First Nations manners and customs, and various military engagements. The maps include (1) A General Map of New France com. called Canada, showing the Great Lakes, Hudson's Bay and the St. Lawrence, and giving locations of First Nations tribes, French and English villages and forts, and areas for trapping beaver, (2) a small version of the same, (3) a purely imaginary depiction of the 'Long River' and territory west of the Mississippi, and (4) a map of Newfoundland. Zustand: Good. 12mo. 95 x 165mm. Contemporary calf with gilt spines. 25 etched plates and 3 maps including the Carte Générale de Canada (short tear on this folding map, which measures 29 x 34 cm.) and the view of Québec. A few plates loose. Louis Armand, Baron de Lahontan served ten years in the French military inCanada, was involved in the Indian Wars, and commanded several posts in thewest. He traveled extensively in the Wisconsin and Minnesota region and theupper Mississippi Valley. Upon his return to Europe he wrote this enormouslypopular travelogue. In it he embellished his knowledge of the geography of theGreat Lakes region, invented Indian tribes, and created several fictions, particularly the River Longue , which he claimed extended from the MississippiRiver to the Rocky Mountains. Over twenty editions of his book were publishedbetween 1703 and 1741, including editions in French, English, Dutch and German. The immense popularity of the book resulted in his distorted cartography being accepted by several eminent cartographers who incorporated the "Lahontan" concepts into most 18th century maps.Volume 1 is the 1704 French edition containing three folding maps and 11 singlepage plates of illustrations. Carte Generale du Canada en Petit Point (3.5 x 5.5")shows the Great Lakes, Boston, Manhattan (Manat) and the Saint Lawrence. Itlocates the lands of the Iroquois, Fort Niagara, Fort de S. Joseph, Sault Ste. Marie,Montreal and Quebec. Profil de la Ville de Quebec (8 x 3.6") is a bird's-eye view ofQuebec with an extensive key below locating important buildings. The river isfilled with French ships and the fleet of the British slightly down river. The thirdmap is one of the most influential, and fanciful maps in American cartographichistory, entitled Carte que les Gnacsitares ont Dessine sur?/ Carte de la RiviereLongue et de Quelques Autres? (11.5 x 5"). It purports to show the RiviereLongue flowing from the mountains in the west, home to the GnacsitaresIndians, and connecting to the Mississippi River. On the western side of themountains is another river, presumably flowing into the Pacific. Lahontan'sconcept was copied by virtually all 18th century cartographers including Moll,Senex, Popple, and Delisle, thus perpetuating the myth. The map also includes balloon-shaped Lakes Superior and Michigan. First printed in The Hague, 1703."Petit dictionnaire de la langue des sauvages", v. 2, p. 199-222, includes a brief discussion of the Huron (Wyandot) and Algonquian languages.Pagination: v. 1: [18], 280, [2] p., [14] leaves of plates (4 folded); v. 2: 222, [18] p., [12] leaves of plates (1 folded).Signatures: v. 1: A-M N (N6 verso blank); v. 2: A-K Includes indexes.Woodcut printer's ornaments on title pages; head pieces.LAHONTAN (Louis-Armand de Lom d'Arce, baron de). Nouveaux voyages dans l'Amérique septentrionale, qui contiennent une relation des differens peuples qui y habitent, la nature de leur gouvernement, leur commerce, leur coûtume, leur religion, & leur manière de faire la guerre. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. "3 volumes in one. 12mo., (6 1/8 x 3 7/8 inches). Title-pages printed in red and black. Four frontispieces, 28 engraved plates and three maps (without the 2 frontispieces in volume II of the first work, a bit browned throughout, one or two marginal tears only affecting the image opposite page 191 in volume II of the first work). Contemporary vellum over thin paste-board, title in manuscript on the spine. Provenance: with the small library label of William Gwinn Mather (1857 - 1951), American Industrialist of Cleveland Ohio, on the front paste-down. First edition, first issue of each volume. Lahontan came to New France in 1683 as captain of a regiment which he led in expeditions against the Iroquois: "Between the fifteenth and sixteenth year of my Age I went to Canada, and there took care to keep up a constant Correspondence by Letters with an old Relation Tis these very letters that make the greatest part of the first Volume. They contain an account of all that pass'd between the English, the French, the Iroquese, and the other Savage Nations, from the year 1683 to 1694" (Lahontan "Preface" to English edition). Lahontan journeyed west in 1687 with Duluth and was given command of Fort St. Joseph on the St. Clair River. In 1688 he travelled further west by the Fox-Wisconsin portage and reached the upper Mississippi. In all Lahontan spent twenty years in the colony fighting the Iroquois and his work is considered "one of the best early works on the subject" (Streeter Sale). During the decade he had spent in North America, Lahontan "had not lacked opportunities to distinguish himself. He had taken part in two campaigns against the Iroquois, had twice been besieged by the English, had visited almost all parts of New France and may well have reached the Mississippi at a time when few Frenchmen had seen it. But he appears to have made little mark; except during his final months at Placentia, the official correspondence of the time scarcely mentions him But while serving and travelling in New France he had done something few of his fellow officers thought to do: "In the course of my Voyages and Travels, I took care to keep particular Journals of every thing . . . ," sometimes even making notes on birch-bark. From these diaries he was able later to compose the three books which were to make him, next to Louis Hennepin, the most widely read author on North America in the first half of the 18th century. "Lahontan's works appeared at a time when travel narratives were enjoying an extraordinary vogue in Europe and when interest in North America, aroused by the 'Jesuit Relations' and whetted by the voyages of Hennepin and Henri Tonty, was greater than ever before. "His 'Nouveaux voyages dans l'Amérique septentrionale' and their sequel, 'Mémoires de septentrionale', were published in January 1703 at The Hague and were twice pirated within a few months. A third volume, entitled 'Supplément aux voyage' [all present here] and containing dialogues possibly written in collaboration in England, appeared later in 1703 in both English and French, the two earlier volumes having meantime been translated into English. "Lahontan's three volumes embraced a wide variety of subject-matter. The 'Nouveaux voyages . . .' recounted in the then popular epistolary form his ten years in New France; midway through the narrative a letter four or five times as long as the rest told a fanciful tale of his imaginary voyage up the Long River. The 'Mémoires' provided a lively geographical account of New France, followed by an anthropological study of its Indian inhabitants and completed by a linguistic commentary and glossary of the Algonkian language. In the third volume the travel narrative was resumed, this time in little-known European states: Portugal, Aragon, Holland, the Hansa cities, and Denmark. The remainder of the book was made up of five imaginary dialogues with an Indian chief whose name, Adario, was a partial anagram of that of the recently deceased".…

Custom quarter morocco slipcase. with 5 raised bands in six compartments and tooled gilt lettering and design and tooled gilt rules. Titles printed in red and black. , The two large folding maps (575 x 415 & 680 x 290mm) of the great lakes are very important in this early large printing format. Further to the map of the great lakes Kershaw states that "this primary map of Canada emphasizes the importance of the river trading routes. . .it is the first map of Canada that was generally available to the public, and was on that defined, at least for the southern and eastern parts of the country the fur-trading routes." (Kershaw 289)First edition, First (or ?Angel?) Issue. Lahontan came to New France in 1683 as captain of a regiment in force against the Iroquois Louis Armand de Lom d'Arce, son of a prominent civil engineer in the court of Louis XIV. In the 1680s Lahontan went to Canada with the Bourbon Regiment, where he served as Lord Lieutenant of the French colony at Placentia in Newfoundland. He commanded Fort St. Joseph in 1687 before deciding to return to the East coast the next year. Baron de Lahontan claimed to have traveled to the northern portions of the Mississippi River and to the villages of the Osage Indians on the Missouri River, but it was his journey to the Long River on his trip back that captivated the attention of adventurers who dreamed of finding a passage to the Pacific.According to Lahontan, during a four-month journey in the winter of 1688-89 his party of three hundred men explored the Long River or, as it is labeled on his map, the "Rivière Morte" or "Rivière Longue." The expedition traveled up the Long River about 800 miles from the Mississippi. At this point Indians told him that he was about 450 miles from a great salt lake that was near some high mountains. Lahontan insisted that the Indians had shown him a map drawn on a deer skin which depicted a large river running to the western sea and he suggests this passage to the Pacific Ocean on his own map. The account of Lahontan?s journey on the Long River, together with his travels throughout New France from 1683 to 1694, was entitled Nouveaux Voyages de Mr. le baron de Lahontan, dans l?Am?rique Septentrionale. This book which included his original map of the Long River was published in The Hague in 1703 in two- and three- volume editions and in London in a two-volume English edition. In 1704 in Amsterdam Lahontan published separately an account of his conversation with an Indian, entitled Dialogues de Monsieur le baron de Lahontan et d?un Sauvage, dans l?Amerique. Lahontan?s works were widely published and very popular in Europe. The Long River appeared on other maps as late as 1785."-From The University of Virginia Library Special Collections. (Howes L-25). Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 2 Volumes. 8vo. pp. 2 p.l., [20], 280; 1 p.l., 302, [2]leaf of ads, [13]index. 4 engraved maps (2 large & folding) & 20 engraved plates (1 folding). complete with the rare frontis. in Vol. II which is usually wanting. modern red straight-grained morocco by Cecil & Larkins, a.e.g. (joints & extremities rubbed, some light foxing). First Edition of the English Translation. Lahontan was only sixteen years of age when he first arrived in New France in 1683, as an officer in the colonial regular troops. During the next ten years he saw active service in the sieur de La Barre's expedition against the Iroquois in 1684, in the Marquis de Denonville's campaign against the Senecas in 1687, and in numerous skirmishes with the English. In 1693 he was appointed King's lieutenant in Plaisance (Placentia), Newfoundland. His career, however, came to an abrupt end when he was accused of insubordination by the governor of Newfoundland, Jacques François de Brouillan. Lahontan fled to Portugal and spent the rest of his life in wandering exile, chiefly in Holland and Germany. The daily journals Lahontan faithfully kept during his stay in New France for the basis of this work, which gained such immense popularity that it went through no less than 25 legitimate and pirated editions within sixty years of its first publication (The Hague: 1703). Next to Louis Hennepin's, his was the most widely read North American travel narrative of the eighteenth century. Despite the exposure, by Charlevois and his cartographer Bellin, of the fictitious nature of Lahontan's voyage up the 'Long River' (the Minnesota), which seriously discredited the work, its overall authenticity is now generally acknowledged. In 1903, the American scholar R.G.Thwaites concluded that "in topography, geography, ethnology, and natural history, all of it the record of personal knowledge, Lahontan's work stands as one of the important sources for the intimate study of New France." The vivid and lively descriptions of New France, its social and political life, the manners and customs of the native inhabitants and their method of warfare, are further enhanced by Lahontain's philosophical views. His notions about Christian dogmatism and the vices of European society which he contrasts with the virtues of the 'noble savage', presaged the work of Swift, Rousseau, and Voltaire. The first English edition was published in London under the patronage of the Duke of Devonshire and it is in many respects preferable to the first edition (The Hague: 1703). Lahontan was in London to supervise the printing and he himself corrected the engravings, which the "Dutch Gravers had murder'd.by not understanding their Explications, which were all in French." (Preface) A map of Newfoundland here appears for the first time and the edition incorporates, in expanded form, the contents of the supplement, detailing the author's travels in Europe and the controversial dialogue with the mythical Indian 'Adario' (identified by some historians as the Huron chief Kondiaronk). Second Edition, revised and enlarged. Next to Hennepin's, Lahontan's was the most widely read North American travel narrative of the period. "In topography, geography, ethnology, and natural history, all of it the record of personal knowledge, Lahontan's work stands as one of the most important sources for the intimate study of New France." (R.G.Thwaites) The majority of the engravings depict native manners and customs, and various military engagements. The maps include (1) a Carte Générale du Canada, showing the Great Lakes, Hudson's Bay and the St. Lawrence, and giving locations of native tribes, French and English villages and forts, and areas for trapping beaver, (2) a small version of the same, and (3) a purely imaginary depiction of the 'Long River' and territory west of the Mississippi. This edition omits Lahontan's travels in Europe, and incorporates his 'Dialogues Curieux Entre L'Auteur Et Un Sauvage', pp. 197ff, into Volume II. The text was also substantially altered by Nicolas Gueudeville, an in-house writer for the publisher. While Gueudeville in his preface claims only to have edited the text to improve the style, Réal Ouellet in Fleming Et Al. (Editors), History of the Book in Canada Volume I, p. 29, shows how "Gueudeville rewrote Lahontan's text, overloading it with rhetoric and a farcical verve that diluted the geographic and especially, the ethnographic information and turning it into an anti-France pamphlet". Although Lahontan himself disavowed the edition, it formed the basis for the Amsterdam editions of 1728 and 1741. Greenly, Lahontan, pp. 356-58. European Americana 705/109-705/110. Gagnon I 1922. Zustand: Very Good. This map that shows the Beaver hunting practices of the Indian population near lake Winnebago and Fox River, Wisconsin, during the Iroquois Wars in the early 18th century. It shows hunting areas and lodging for the hunters. There is also battle scenes, Iroquois warriors being ambushed, fighting off wild beasts and Iroquois taken as prisoners of war by their French enemies and their allies. The Beaver Wars?also known as the Iroquois Wars or the French and Iroquois Wars?encompass a series of conflicts fought in the mid-17th century in eastern North America. The Iroquois sought to expand their territory and monopolize the fur trade and the trade between European markets and the tribes of the western Great Lakes region. The Iroquois Confederation, led by the dominant Mohawk, mobilized against the largely Algonquian-speaking tribes of the Great Lakes region. The Iroquois were armed by their Dutch and English trading partners; the Algonquian were backed by the French, their chief trading partner. The wars were brutal and are considered one of the bloodiest series of conflicts in the history of North America. As the Iroquois destroyed several large tribal confederacies?including the Huron, Neutral, Erie, Susquehannock, and Shawnee, they became dominant in the region and enlarged their territory, realigning the tribal geography of North America. , Size : 162x179 (mm), 6.38x7.05 (Inches), Hand Colored.…

Zustand: Very Good. This map shows military camp of Labarre near Lake Frontenac, preparing for battle during the Beaver Wars, from the early 18th century. It shows the boats, encampments and various soldiers.Joseph-Antoine le Fèbvre de La Barre (1622?1688) was the Governor of New France from 1682 to 1685. He had previously been Governor of Auvergne and of the French Antilles (1666 and 1667, then temporarily until 1669). Having replaced the frustrated Comte de Frontenac, La Barre set out to permanently establish the fur trade in the west (in and around what is now Kingston, Ontario). In 1683 he, along with a few hundred soldiers (Troupes de la marine), made camp at the future site of Oswego, New York to wait for the Iroquois attack. After a while, over a hundred of La Barre's men fell ill and supplies ran out. La Barre and his men elected to return to Montreal and abandon the west. They left Oswego and Fort Frontenac (Kingston) to the Iroquois. As punishment, the French government handed La Barre's governorship to Jacques-René de Brisay, Marquis de Denonville, a tough, pious cavalry officer., Size : 150x114 (mm), 5.91x4.49 (Inches), Hand Colored.…
