Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. First Edition. Superior copy, gift-quality condition, inside and out, no discernible wear, bright and shiny dust jacket, protected. Apparently unread, spine still crackles. Light brown paper over boards, black cloth-backed, with sharp and distinct lettering to spine. Edited and with new translations by Willis Barnstone. Extensive notes, a glossary, and testimonia from Sappho's admirers and critics from Plato to Plutarch. From the publisher's blurb, " "Though time has reduced the nine volumes of her work to a handful of complete poems and a collection of fragments, each word and phrase that survives is poignantly significant. The clarity of her voice, its absolute candor, its amazingly fresh authority - whether in addressing a goddess, dancers before a light altar, the moon and stars, a sweet apple or mountain hyacinth, a lamb or cricket, a love or companion - are qualities that compel us today as in antiquity. Willis Barnstone has given us a close and beautifully lyrical translation, with the original Greek on facing pages, that includes a dozen hitherto unintelligible fragments that have been brought vibrantly back to life by him, as well as Sappho's newly discovered poem from the Cologne papyrus in its complete form. The book also contains the translator's essay placing the poet in her historic and artistic context; a glossary; extensive notes; an epilogue and metrical guide by William E. McCulloh, Professor Emeritus of Classics at Kenyon College; and a special section of testimonia; appreciations of Sappho in the words of her ancient admirers." Volume contains scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. xlix [1], 2-316 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.

First edition. Corrugated covers in plain printed jacket; square 8vo. 52 pp. An attractive program printing poems by some of the attendees including Philip Booth, Donald Justice, Stanley Kunitz, William Meredith, Charles Olson, Theodore Roethke, and James Wright. Faculty poems include those by Ruth Stone and Richard Wilbur. Highlights of the festival were two plays of William Carlos Williams and an assembly with Robert Frost (apparently closing the celebration), but no work included by them here. Signed by Richard Wilbur at his contribution (on the last page): Wilbur's poem "Grasshopper" did not appear until 1961 in a collection, so this would presumably constitute the first book appearance. Nicely printed on dark brown paper with corrugated end papers. Toning to the spine, light soiling, very good. Scarce and rare signed by Wilbur.
