Short introductory essay by Patrick Langley: "Superfluidity is an abstruse scientific phenomenon. Yet its behaviour is recognisable from sci-fi films and dreams. First observed in 1908 by the Dutch physicist and Nobel laureate Heike Kamerlingh Onnes during experiments into the physical properties of supercooled helium gas, superfluids appear to be almost conscious (.) Acrylic paint is not a superfluid. Yet Barlow's painting technique emphasises its most active qualities. By thinning the paint with water, layering it onto unprimed canvas placed horizontally in his studio, reshaping, retouching and scraping away parts of the acrylic as it dries, Barlow encourages the paint to split, seep, pool, and drape its pigment in tangled patterns of branching lines".
