FIRST EDITION, tiny spot at head of half-title, pp. vii, 313, small 4to, original bevel-edged blue cloth, single fillet border to both boards, backstrip lettered in gilt, a little rubbed at extremities, t.e.g., ticket of binder (Burn) to rear pastedown, successive ownership inscriptions to verso of flyleaf, very good. Inscribed by the translator on the initial blank, 'With the compliments of the author', but the name of the recipient illegible. Baring was a banker and Tory M.P., in both following his father of the same name; he had been educated at Harrow and Wadham College, Oxford, then becoming a Fellow at Brasenose, as recorded on the title-page here. The present volume follows his translations of Horace into English Rhyme, published in 1870.
