In den WarenkorbZustand: Good. 1st edition. Orginal cloth, VG. xvi+234pp. engraved frontis, engraved title, letterpress title, 13 engraved plates, 1 chromo plate and numerous woodcut illustrations, The cloth is a little rubbed at the edges & there is some spotting & foxing to the plates. Spine expertly rebacked. Overall a nice copy of a scarce…book. William Bardwell [ 1795 - 1890 ] was an architect & sanitary engineer who seems to have devoted much of his carreer to the Victorian Passion for 'improving' existing buildings. In this book, which he published at his own expense, he displays, after a historical survey of Church Architecture several ideas & designs for enlarging & improving London's City churches. He dislikes Wren 'notwithstanding his errors of detail' and states that it is the Classical Italian which befits the Protestant Church Building. He designed Glenstal Abbey School in a mock medieval style, and many other minor public buildings. 1000 grams.

In den WarenkorbAlbumen print photograph, carte de visite format, 102 x 62 mm (mount); verso of mount imprinted 'Bardwell, Ballarat. Photographer By Special Appointment to HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and His Excellency Sir George Bowen. Awarded the three First Prize Medals at the International Exhibition 1872-3, and the First Gold Medal from the…South Kensington Exhibition 1873-4, for Excellence in Photography'; the print has a tiny surface scratch at upper right, but is otherwise in very good condition, as is the mount. This lovely portrait of a young Ballarat woman holding a book (a Holy Bible - or a photograph album?) came from a distressed album presented by Alfred William Goddard (Ballarat 1857-1910 Prahran) to his second wife Sarah Jane (Fountain) (Ballarat 1858-1925 Richmond), in 1887. Is it perhaps a portrait of Sarah Fountain prior to her marriage to Alfred in 1879? Alfred Goddard's first wife, Dorothy Gunther (also a native of Ballarat) had died some time prior to 1879. Alfred married Sarah Fountain, daughter of Joseph Fountain of Canadian Gully, at St. Paul's Ballarat East, on 9 April 1879. The couple then moved to Melbourne, where they resided at Bowen Villa, 13 Donald Street, Prahran, up until Alfred's death in 1910. The couple had three children: George Herbert, who died in 1908, Steven ("Steve"), and Stephanie. An obituary for Alfred was published in the Malvern Standard, 15 October 1910: 'MrAlfredGoddard. It is with much regret that we haveto record the death of MrAlfredGoddard,ofDonald street,Prahran, which took place on Thursday afternoon last at theAlfredHospital.MrGoddardwas 52 years of age,and leaves a widow, who will receivethe deepest sympathy in her sadbereavement. The deceased gentleman was some years ago connectedwith the Post Office, but for manyyears he was afterwards connectedwith Singer's Sewing Machine Co,and by his ability and tact provehimself a very successful agent. Hewas one of the earliest members ofthePrahranbranch of the A N.A.and the Natives will feel the loss ofa valued member, friend, and adviser.MrGoddard, senr, is a resident of Ballarat.' After Alfred's death, Sarah took another husband, Mr. J. David. She died in Richmond, Melbourne, in 1925.

In den WarenkorbAlbumen print photograph with hand colouring, cabinet card format, 160 x 120 mm; recto with gilt border and imprint in lower margin 'Cabinet Portrait. From Bardwell's Royal Studio, Ballarat.'; verso with the sitter's inscription in ink 'George Bennett, Oct. 1869, Ballaarat, Australia'; both the print and mount are in excellent c…ondition. A magnificent hand-coloured studio portrait by William Bardwell. We believe the imperious-looking gentleman in top hat and frock coat, holding his leather gloves in the right hand, is the stage actor George Bennett, who in 1869 was touring with the visiting American Shakespearean actor Walter Montgomery. The fact that his inscription includes the word Australia suggests that he was not from the colonies. In his lapel he is wearing what appears to be a printed card - a stage pass? - attached to a chain with gold and green decoration Bennett's name appears in a review of Montgomery's production of Antony and Cleopatraat Melbourne's Theatre Royal, published in the Leader, 10 July 1869: '.the rugged pathos of Phelps,Cooper andGeorgeBennettmaking the inferior parts stand forth in relief.' A few months later, on 2 October 1869, The Weekly Times of Melbourne reported that 'Mr. Walter Montgomery having concluded hisdramatic performances and recitals at Adelaide, isnow in Melbourne. He has been announced toappear at Ballarat in " King John," and"AntonyandCleopatra,"but it is not certain whether hewill proceed with the engagement.' This might explain why George Bennett was in Ballarat in October 1869, where he had his portrait taken at Bardwell's studio - which was located, as it so happens, directly opposite the Theatre Royal.

In den WarenkorbAlbumen print photograph, carte de visite format, 105 x 63 mm (mount), rectosigned by the sitter in ink across the studio imprint in the lower margin 'Alice Lingard'; verso with 'Bardwell, Melbourne' printed in gold ink, along with the wet stamp of the 'William Horace Lingard Comedy Company'; in fine condition. English actress A…lice Dunning Lingard(1847-1897) toured Australia in 1876 as part of her husband William Lingard's comedy company. Her sister Harriet, who used the stage name ?Dickie Lingard?, was also a performer in the company. The two sisters had already met with success in the United States, and it is interesting to note that in the Australian press they were referred to as "Anglo-American" or simply "American". Both were renowned for their beauty; one Melbourne critic remarked after seeing their performance at the Theatre Royal, that '.itwould be difficult to find in any theatre outsidethe large cities of the world five more beautifulwomen than are MissAliceDunningLingard,Miss DickieLingard, Miss Eleanor Carey, MissBlancheStammers, and Miss Nita Gerald.' This promotional carte de visite, signed by Alice, almost certainly dates to around the start of the Lingards' tour in February 1876. It would have been sold as a souvenir, most likely to a patron at the Theatre Royal or visitor to Bardwell's studio at the top end of Collins Street.

In den WarenkorbRegistered 8th March 1868. Interior of Battery House at No. 7 Shaft. Circa 1880. Albumen print photograph of a contemporary lithographic print by F.W. Niven, 250 x 350 mm, laid down on its original album leaf of thick card, 'F.W. Niven' inscribed within the lithographed image at upper right, no photographer's imprint (but a larg…er format print is attested with the blind stamp of William Bardwell, Ballarat), with exterior and interior views of the mine and two cartouches with printed statistical information, one with a date of September 10th 1880, the print trimmed very slightly at each edge, a small bend at upper left corner, otherwise a strong print in very good condition. Originally formed in 1858, the Band of Hope gold mining company was the Colony's most ambitious and ultimately most successful. Although its first shaft was not completed until early in 1866, it soon began to yield vast quantities of gold, and ten further shafts were eventually completed. In 1868 the company re-formed as a joint stock company, known as theBand of Hope and AlbionConsols. The present photograph of a lithograph by the local printing firm of F.W. Niven would have been sold commercially during the early 1880s, celebrating the mine as Ballarat's most important landmark and also as a marvel of late nineteenth century engineering. By the time of its closure in 1908, the Band of Hope and Albion Consols had produced a staggering total yield of 22.5 tons of gold. F.W. Niven and William Bardwell had joined forces to produce another commercial souvenir of the mine in 1872. This featured a Bardwell albumen print photograph of the mine exterior laid down on a large format decorative colour lithograph card mount produced by F.W. Niven. A copy is held in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia (accession no.NGA 84.40 NGA IRN: 34386). However, we can locate no other copy of the present albumen print nor of Niven's original lithograph in Australian collections.

In den WarenkorbAlbumen print photograph, cabinet card format, 165 x 109 mm (mount), rectoimprinted in gold across lower margin 'Bardwell / 21 Collins Street East, Melbourne / Instantaneous Photographs'; verso blank; the print has a short horizontal indentation with a small surface abrasion at centre left edge, but is otherwise in very good con…dition; the mount is clean and stable. A possibly unrecorded self-portrait of William Bardwell (1836-1929), pioneer Ballarat photographer. It was taken in his Collins Street studio around 1880, following his move to Melbourne in 1879. The National Portrait Gallery holds a carte de visite format self-portrait of Bardwell bearing the imprint of his Ballarat studio, which it dates to 1870. However, given that Bardwell appears to be about the same age (early 40s) in both portraits, it is likely that the NPG's portrait dates to no earlier than around 1878. According to Davies & Stanbury (Mechanical Eye in Australia), Bardwell was active at his 21 Collins Street address - his first Melbourne studio - only from 1880, but the DAAO (see below) suggests he had already relocated to Melbourne by the end of 1878. From DAAO: 'WilliamBardwell, professional photographer, was employed in 1858 bySaul Solomonat Ballarat, Victoria providing photographs of the town which were lithographed byFrançois Cogné forThe Ballarat Album(1859). Solomon and Bardwell were soon partners; they worked in Main Street from 1859, in Sturt Street from 1865 and visited Maryborough and Dunolly (Victoria) in 1865. Together they exhibited photographic portraits at the 1862 Geelong Industrial Exhibition and the 1863 Ballarat Mechanics Institute Exhibition. Their 'new sennotype process? was judged 'highly successful? by theIllustrated Melbourne Postof 27 December 1862. On 9 February 1863, theArgusreported that Bardwell had photographed the ceremony of the laying of the foundation stone of the Burke and Wills memorial in Sturt Street from a vantage point on the roof of the Ballarat Post Office. By 28 September 1866 the partnership seems to have been dissolved for Bardwell was then advertising his Royal Photographic Studio in theClunes Gazette: 'The studio is every way replete with suitable accommodation for the preparation of toilet and rooms are provided for both ladies and gentlemen. Mr Bardwell?s long and practical example will entitle him to the claim to the first position in Ballarat as a photographer.? He exhibited views and portraits, includingPortrait of the Very Rev. Dean Hayes, at the 1869 Ballarat Institute Exhibition and showed photographs of Ballarat at the 1870 Sydney Intercolonial (for sale at £6). Other exhibited photographs included 'a large panorama of the city of Ballarat, in a semi-circular form?, shown at the 1872 Victorian Exhibition. Photographs believed to be by Bardwell of the Chinese giant Chang Woo Gow and his wife and child (who visited Ballarat 1870) are held at the Gold Museum, Ballarat, while the Mitchell Library has an 1871 Bardwell photograph of Chang alone. His photograph ofThe Band of Hope and Albion Consolidated Registered [mining company], Ballarat 1872was incorporated into a lithographic advertisement for the company byF.W. Niven, and Niven?sDirectory for the City of Ballaratfor 1875 included an original photograph advertising Bardwell?s studio. The Mitchell and La Trobe libraries hold large collections of Bardwell?s cartes-de-visite portraits and views of Ballarat. Although Bardwell was in partnership withJ. Beauchampat Ballarat for some part of 1878, he was working on his own in Melbourne later that year. The photographer at Bardwell?s Royal Studios at Ballarat during the 1880s was a Mr Williams; William Bardwell remained in Melbourne. From his studio at 11 Royal Arcade, Melbourne, William Bardwell exhibited photographs at the Melbourne Centennial International Exibition 1888-89 in the Victorian Court Class 12: Photographic proofs and apparatus, cat. no. 293.'.
