The second edition of a Renaissance work written by Giambattista della Porta (1535-1615), an Italian polymath and scholar. In the book, the author deals with problems of astrology and physiognomy. Antiqua typeface; the title page features a woodcut device of Lazarus Zetzner (with his motto "Scientia immutabilis"); other pages are decorated with woodcut initials and one simple tailpiece. Provenance: The title page has an ownership note of the Cistercian monastery of Sancta Corona in South Bohemia (Zlata Koruna in Czech); on the verso, there is a bookplate of its library; the front endpaper contains a call number written with pen. In 16° (12,7x8 cm); (16), 458 pp. Legatura coeva in piena pergamena semi-rigida con titolo manoscritto da mano coeva al recto. Qualche lieve difetto e segno del tempo alla legatura. Una piccolissima mancanza di carta nel margine alto interno bianco della carta con1'antiporta figurata che presenta il leone di San Marco che regge il titolo e sotto, insieme di scudi ed armi al suolo ed una scena di battaglia navale sullo sfondo e nel complesso esemplare in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione. Seconda edizione dopo la prima del 1638 di questa storia veneziana che copre il periodo dall'anno 538 al 1615, scritta dal noto abate padovano di nascita ma veneziano d'adozione, Gianbattista Vero (anche Veri, Verus, Breganze in provincia di Vicenza oggi ma nel seicento sotto Padova 1600 1684) che fu a lungo bibliotecario della Biblioteca Capitolare. Prima di diventare Bibliotecario della Capitolare fu al servizio del Cardinale Barberini. Fu anche un messo potificio in importanti azioni diplomatiche come quando venne mandato a Malta per chiedere al Gran Maestro dei Cavalieri di Malta di utilizzare le sue galee in una missione in levante. Quando venne nominato bibliotecario capitolare come scrive Francesco Scipione Dondi «migliorò la fabbrica della libreria. dispose i codici in miglior ordine e lasciò morendo picciola dote annuale per la pulitura della medesima». Fu autore di diverse opere sacre e profane. Dice il Foscarini a pagina 250 che quest'opera di Vero e' "la più esatta di tutte, sebbene compendiosamente scritta: sicché quest'autore potrebbe essere reputato il floro della storia veneziana". Il luogo di stampa di Amsterdam è probabilmente falso ed è più probabile che l'opera venne pubblicata a Leida da Franciscus Hegerus. Rif.
