In addition, there are 140 engraved full-page plates (including the frontispiece, numbered 2 to 140), by Boucher, Eisen, Gravelot, Leprince, Monnet, and Moreau, and engraved by Baquoy, Basan, Binet, Duclos, and de Ghendt - 48 in the first volume, 33 in the second, 37 in the third, and 22 in the last. Publius Ovidius Naso (43 BC-AD 17/18) was one of the triumvirate of great Augustan ("Golden Age") Roman poets, along with Vergil and Horace. The Metamorphoses is his most ambitious and most consequential work -- indeed, one of the most influential poems ever written. It states its own mode in the opening lines: "in nova fert animus mutatas dicere formas/ corpora," (I.1-2) here translated by Banier -- Latin and French facing -- as "j'ai formé le dessein de chanter tous les changemens arrivés dans la Nature aux corps qui ont été revêtus de nouvelles figures." The Metamorphoses -- the title a clear signal of Ovid's debt to his Greek antecedents (Nicander, Theocritus, Callimachus et al.) -- spans from the creation of the universe to the apotheosis of Julius Caesar. Within are myths that spin round the axis of transformation: Actaeon turned into a stag, Narcissus turned into a flower, Daphne turned into a tree, Arachne turned into a spider. The translation of the text is by Abbé Antoine Banier (1673-1741), a French Jesuit who revived the tradition of Euhemerism in the modern era. Euhemerus was a IVc BC mythographic writer who propounded that myths reflected real historical events or figures -- that they were in fact projections into the divine of mortal history. Pierre-François Basan and Noël Le Mire superintended the work of the greatest draughtsmen and engravers: Boucher, Choffard, Eisen, Monnet, Gravelot et al. The etched-engraved plates have a solidity and power often dissolved into the frilliness of the late XVIIIc; Cohen-de Ricci calls this a "superbe ouvrage dû aux soins de l'editeur Basan et du graveur Le Mire. C'est un des plus galamment illustrés de tout le siècle" (II.769); Ray dubs it the "supreme anthology of French rococo book illustration." The set was owned by Michel Legrand, magistrate and judge (as indicated by the cap and the scales of justice on his bookplate) from Boulogne-sur-Mer, who collected many of the great French books in fine bindings: Rousseau's Confessions, the complete works of Musset, Balzac etc. His motto, "DANS MON COIN," is perhaps a nod to his composer namesake, who wrote "Et moi dans mon coin," famously sung by Charles Aznavour.
