Hardcover. Zustand: New. Contents: 1. Introduction. 2. Material and methods. 3. Results. 4. Discussion. 5. Acknowledgements. 6. References. 7. Representative photographs. Taxonomic research on Indian hoverflies has flourished over the past few decades with numerous species being synonymized, changes being made at species, generi…c, tribe and subfamily levels, several species discovered, and may species were newly recorded, which produces a need for updating Indian syrphid taxon list. To provide comprehensive data on hoverflies across the country, the authors have systematically catalogued Indian hoverflies with detailed information on type, species, synonymies and distributional data from relevant literature. A total of 369 species in 79 genera under 4 subfamilies are listed in the present work, including 3 unconfirmed species records, which makes the Indian Syrphid taxon list to comprise 366 species in 77 genera under 13 tribes and 4 subfamilies. This book will be an important database for future workers, working on Indian Hoverflies.

Thrown across the farthest reaches of India, obscured from the greater world by ageless forests and formidable mountain ranges, the state of Assam has Asia's great natural and anthropological sanctuaries. Favourable climate, topographic and edaphic factors support huge variety of flora and fauna from here. However even after this immense range of diversity, very few studies have been done to study the invertebrate faunal diversity from the state of Assam in last 50 years, which ensures the possibility of getting an updated and diverse account of invertebrate fauna from this hill state. This sparked the concept of invertebrate faunal studies from the state of Assam. For the first time, a consolidated study has been done on the current taxonomic status of different invertebrate faunal groups from the state of Assam. The Survey has been done along different protected areas from the state of Assam including different National Park and Wildlife Sanctuaries. Present research work includes invertebrate faunal resources studies across different district of Assam throughout the entire state. The book dealt with 6595 faunal species covering Protozoa to Mollusca from the state in 27 chapters. The detailed checklist of 80 species of Protozoa, 6595 species of invertebrates along with 113 species of endemic fauna of Assam have been illustrated in the document. Moreover, 16 species have been recorded for the first time from India. Further, 134 species have been recorded for the first time from the state of Assam. This book will serve, as a baseline data to understand the invertebrate faunal diversity of the state as well as it will be a comprehensive documentation for revised conservation strategies and sustainable use of bio resources.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Contents: 1. Introduction. 2. Material and methods. 3. Systematic list. 4. Systematic account. 5. Discussion. 6. Summary. 7. Acknowledgements. 8. References. From the introduction: Flies of family Tabanidae are true Brachyceran flies under infraorder Tabanomorpha and superfamily Tabanoidea.… They are commonly known as "Dansmachi" in India. They are true flies with varying sizes, commonly known as deerfly, horsefly and clegs for their disease causing vector capabilities in different wild animals like horses, deer, cattle and other livestock. They are mainly large bodied sturdy flies and their size ranges from 7-33 mm, known for their furious bite to vertebrate animals including human. Flies of this family are mainly characterised on the basis of sickle shaped antennae (3rd segment annulated), pulvilliform empodium, and 4th and 5th radial veins which always terminate on either side of the wing (Thomas, 2011). Males and females of this family are mainly differentiated in terms of eyes, being separated in females and contiguous in males. They are generally with broad bodies and bulging eyes. The adults of both sexes feed on nectar and pollen of flowers and also known to take blood meals from vertebrate animals mainly during their reproductive period (Chainey, 2014). Tabanids have a wide range of habitats and some of them even prefer bushy regions. They are found in large numbers in agricultural fields, to be closely associated with domestic cattle, kept for feeding throughout the day specially during rainy season, when sunlight comes out after rain and during their return from the field after sunset respectively. Immature stages of tabanids are often found in damp environments, such as wetland or bushy regions near streams. Some horseflies are seen to fly on lighted streets, stroking on window glasses in night or entering lighted house (Datta, 1991).

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Contents: Preface. About the book. Introduction. Aims and objectives of the study. Materials and methods. Systematic list of species. Chapter 1. Chapter 2. Chapter 3. Discussion. Acknowledgements. References. Because of the way they feed, forensic dipterans are typically the first group of carrion entomo…fauna to visit the carrion to begin the decomposition process, generally within minutes of death. Even though the adult dipterans consume the fluids from the body, the larvae are the real agents of decomposition because they release enzymes immediately into the carrion, which aids in the breakdown of the cadaver tissues and boosts microbial activity. The initial arthropods known to visit dead bodies within minutes of their passing are dipterans, particularly blowflies. Following them come slow waves of dipteran succession, typically from other dominating families like Muscidae and Sarcophagidae, flowed later by less common necrophilic groups. The main goal of this book was to compile comprehensive information on the taxonomy of forensic flies, their molecular identification, and the bionomics of the most abundant forensic flies linked to the vertebrate carcass in various geo-climatic areas of West Bengal. The authors have compiled information on 59 forensic fly species available from West Bengal with 6 new records of species. Such an effort is being made for the first time, which is extremely important from the perspectives of carrion ecology and related fields, in addition to its implications for forensic entomology studies from this region. The current integrative investigation also included the COI barcoding of forensic fly species, including Sarcophagidae, Muscidae, Calliphoridae, Phoridae, etc. for molecular identification in place of morphology-based species identification. This work enables the COI gene database of forensic flies in GenBank and BOLD from this part of India. Bionomics of the two most abundant species of forensic flies namely Chrysomya megacephala and Sarcophaga (Liosarcophaga) dux are included in this book. These compiled information and data will significantly help forensic research and forensic scientists from the part of India.
