Negligible light rubbing and a few small stains to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, front board starting to separate but secure, rear joint starting at ends, chipping to spine ends, later owner bookplates of Charles Amory with the owner inscription of Susan G. Dexter, pasted over bookplate of William H. Eliot, to front pastedown. Moderate toning to interior, very light foxing in a few places. A good copy with an interesting provenance. $450. * First American edition. Heeren was a historian who belonged to the deeply influential Gottingen School. This book translates a portion of his best-known work, Ideen Uber Die Politik, Den Verkehr Und Den Handel Der Vornehmsten Volker Der Alten Welt (1793), which dealt with various aspects of politics, travel and commerce in the ancient world. Bancroft was a historian, statesman and politician who served as secretary of the Navy and held several diplomatic positions in addition to translating and authoring a number of important works. Although Dr. Charles Amory, M.D. [1808-1898] graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1832, he did not practice medicine and instead became a prominent Boston manufacturer and merchant.
