Shigeru Ban (*1957) studierte in den 1980er Jahren am Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles und wechselte an die Cooper Union?s School of Architecture in New York City, wo John Hejduk sein Lehrer war, und schloss das Studium im Jahr 1984 ab.In seinem Werk verbindet Ban die traditionelle japanische Bauweise mit moderner Architektur. Seit 1986 ist er vor allem bekannt für seine Konstruktionen mit Kartonröhren. Informed by a thorough and early interest in sustainable forms, his innovative practice pioneered the use of paper as a structural element in buildings. This book features permanent and temporary structures, ranging from one-off museums and exhibition spaces to emergency structures for communities displaced by natural and man-made catastrophes. The forty projects featured in the book showcase the variety of possible applications for paper and its derivative forms (cardboard, fiber-based composites).
