The fungal infestation of onion bulbs during storage in sack shows that five fungi each were isolated from the onion bulbs during storage in sack at day zero and day seven respectively while at day fourteen, six fungal infestations were isolated from the onion bulbs during storage in sack. A total of sixteen fungi infested the onion bulbs during storage in sack. The fungi belong to four genera and six species of fungi infested the onion bulbs during storage in sack. Aspersillus niger and Aspersillus flavus were the most frequently isolated fungi with 31.25% each followed by Fusarium oxysporum and Aspergillus fumigatus with 12.50% each while Penicillium chrysogenum and Rhizopus stolonifer recorded 6.25% each. The antioxidant analysis of onion extract after storage in sack for 14 days recorded at all concentrations, show that the antioxidant property of the onion extract at day zero and day 7 was higher than that of 14. The inhibition of free radical DPPH at day zero and 7 were 29.92 %, 49.21%, 69.29%, 70.07% and 47.63% while at day 14, the percentage (%) of inhibition of free radical DPPH were 29.33 %, 49.02%, 69.01%, 69.77% and 47.21%. Healthy, undamaged onion bulbs which have been dried in the field should be stored in dry, well ventilated stores. This will reduce growth and development of fungal pathogens and minimize storage rots. Therefore, A. cepa and its constituents could be of therapeutic value in disorders such as aging, anti-inflammatory, and wound healing processes where radical scavenging activity can be of therapeutic value.

The zone diameter of inhibition in millimeter of Aqueous extracts of herbal mixture at concentration of 500 mg/ml against Staphylococcus aureus shows that Herbal mixture met the standard of the antibiotic used as the positive control (Chloramphenicol) with 25.0±1.0 mm each. Meanwhile Streptococcus pyogene had significant zone diameter of inhibition (24mm against the herbal mixtures) at concentration of 500mg/ml. The extracts of the herbal mixture had the minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) of 200 mg/ml against Staphylococcus aureus and which correlate with the control (Chloramphenicol), while the MIC of 400 mg/ml against Streptococcus pyogene respectively. The Minimum bactericidal concentration of the extracts shows that the herbal mixtures have the least value of 400 mg/ml which correlates with the standard antibiotic (Chloramphenicol) used as control against Streptococcus pyogene. The Herbal mixture had MBC of 400 mg/ml which also correlates with the standard antibiotics drug (Chloramphenicol).

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Bachelor Thesis from the year 2022 in the subject Biology - Micro- and Molecular Biology, grade: 4.27, University Of Abuja (FACULTY OF SCIENCE), course: MICROBIOLOGY, language: English, abstract: This study on the antimicrobial effects of Allium sativum (garlic) and Zinger officinale (ginger) on pathogenic bacteria was conducted. The result of zone of inhibitions of Ethanolic extracts of the Allium sativum (garlic) and Zinger officinale (ginger) as described in the material and methods is presented. The zone diameter of inhibition in millimeter of Ethanolic extracts of Allium sativum (garlic) and Zinger officinale (ginger) at concentration of 500 mg/ml against Staphylococcus aureus shows that Allium sativum (garlic) and Zinger officinale (ginger) met the standard of the antibiotic used as the positive control (chloramphenicol) with 25.0±1.0 mm each. Meanwhile Salmonella typhi had significant zone diameter of inhibition (21mm, 22 and 24mm against Zinger officinale (ginger) and Allium sativum (garlic) respectively at concentration of 500mg/ml.Two of the extracts which include Allium sativum (garlic) and Zinger officinale (ginger) had the minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) of 125 mg/ml against Staphylococcus aureus and which correlate with the control (Cloramphenicol). Meanwhile Zinger officinale (ginger) had MIC of 250 mg/ml against Salmonella typhi respectively. The Minimum bactericidal concentration of the extracts shows that only Allium sativum (garlic) have the least value of 250 mg/ml which correlates with the standard antibiotic (chloramphenicol) used as control against Salmonella typhi while the rest of the other plant extracts which include Zinger officinale (ginger) had 500 mg/ml each as MBC against Salmonella typhi. Similarly, both Allium sativum (garlic) and Zinger officinale (ginger) had MBC of 250 mg/ml which also correlates with the standard antibiotics drug (Cloramphenicol).
