From the publisher: "From the moment he arrived in New Mexico in 1964, Gus Blaisdell (19352003) was a legendary presence. Famous in Albuquerque as a writer, teacher, publisher, editor, and especially as the proprietor of the Living Batch bookstore, Blaisdell was also a brilliant critic whose essays influenced readers throughout the country and across the Atlantic. This long-awaited collection of Blaisdell's critical writings includes essays on literature, art, and film, along with moving tributes by some of the distinguished writers who numbered Blaisdell among their friends. Introductory essays by philosopher Stanley Cavell and literary critic David Morris join colleague Ira Jaffe's poignant memoir to provide perspectives on the man by friends who knew him well. Glimpses of Blaisdell's vivid personality can be had from the many photographs included, and the diligently researched chronology compiled by Nicole Blaisdell Ivey tracks the course of her father's complicated life." Printed Wrappers. Zustand: Good +. (Ex-Library). First Edition 1/2500. 48pp, 24 b&w and 3 color illustrations. With an exhibition checklist, and a biography, exhibition history and bibliography for each photographer. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. This is the catalogue of the landmark 1975 George Eastman House "New Topographics" exhibition - the show that first defined the newly burgeoning photographic documentation of the contemporary urban landscape. It features a prescient essay by assistant curator William Jenkins, brief texts by Robert Adams, Lewis Baltz, Nicholas Nixon and Jorge Luis Borges as well as three full-page images each for Adams, Baltz, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Joe Deal, Frank Gohlke, Nixon, John Schott, Stephen Shore, and Henry Wessel, Jr. A most presentable example of this uncommon, historically highly-significant document (cited on page 11 of "From Fair to Fine 2") showing some light overall wear and patination to its white wrappers along with a thin horizontal adhesive ghost with two small surface abrasions from a removed label wrapping around the spine. Inside are two institutional library bookplates - one from Los Angeles' Otis Art Institute, and more interestingly from the UCLA Art Library's Robert Heinecken collection that bears a "Discarded" stamp in black ink. There are additionally discreet "Discard" stamps on the edges of the tetblock. It has been priced accordingly. Exhibition Catalog.
