He was a reclusive man, his paintes showing narrative scences, often charged and disquieting in their imagery. His childhood was emerged in the art world, meeting many famous artists and writers, including Jean Cocteau, who used Balthus' family as inspiration for his novel 'Les Enfant Terribles'. Die Katze ist eines der großen Themen in seiner Kunst, eine Art Alter Ego. Künstlerisch beginnt dieses Thema mit den hier vorliegenden frühen Holzschnitten, später setzt es sich fort etwa mit seinem König der Katzen von 1935, mit der Katze des Mittelmeeres von 1949 oder dem eigenwilligen Spätwerk Große Komposition mit Rabe aus dem Jahr 1983/86. - Rainer Maria Rilke verband eine Liebschaft mit Balthus` Mutter und er war der Patenonkel des Jungen; er erkannte und förderte früh dessen künstlerische Begabung, auch durch die Beförderung der hier vorliegenden Publikation; aus seiner Kosebezeichnung "Baltusz" entwickelte sich später der Künstlername Balthus (eigentlich Balthasar Klossowski de Rola).
