Octavo; blue linen over boards, titled in gilt on spine; dustjacket; 159pp. Offsetting to endpapers from jacket flaps, else a tight, Fine and unmarked copy. In the original dustwrapper, price-clipped, slightly toned at spine and margins; Very Good+. Jiménez, the beloved Andalusian poet, won the Nobel Prize in 1956, prompting a rush among English-language publishers to issue his work, most of which had never been translated into English. Platero y Yo, an allegorical prose-poem originally published (in Spanish) in 1914, appeared almost simultaneously in two competing translations. It would appear that this version, translated by William & Mary Roberts and published by the New York rare book dealer Philip Duschnes, edged out the competition - a translation by Eloise Roach, published by the University of Texas Press - by a few months (though the Roach translation has long been considered the more definitive of the two).
