J…iménez, the beloved Andalusian poet, won the Nobel Prize in 1956, prompting a rush among English-language publishers to issue his work, most of which had never been translated into English. Platero y Yo, an allegorical prose-poem originally published (in Spanish) in 1914, appeared almost simultaneously in two competing translations. It would appear that this version, translated by William & Mary Roberts and published by the New York rare book dealer Philip Duschnes, edged out the competition - a translation by Eloise Roach, published by the University of Texas Press - by a few months (though the Roach translation has long been considered the more definitive of the two). This edition is quite uncommon and bears the distinction of being the first translation into English of any of Jiménez' full-length works.
