Walter Ballmer (Liestal, 22 July 1923 Milan, 28 September 2011) was a Swiss graphic designer. After graduating in graphic design at the Kunstgewerbeschule, a school of arts and crafts in Basel, Ballmer moved to Milan in 1947, where he began collaborating with Studio Boggeri. In 1956 he was hired by Adriano Olivetti as a graphic designer at the Olivetti development and advertising department in Ivrea. In 1970 he created the Olivetti logo, for which he later took care of the restyling. He is also involved in the creation of the company's coordinated image, helping to create its international fame. In 1971 he set up his own business by opening the Unidesign studio. He works for important companies, such as Weber of the FIAT group, the Wertheim chain of stores in Spain, the Nava artigrafichie, the designer Valentino, the Sestriere tourist office, Pirelli, Montecatini, La Roche and Colmar. He participates in important personal and collective exhibitions in Venice, Milan, Genoa, London, Paris and Johannesburg. Noted for the Compasso d'Oro in 1954, he received the certificate of merit at the Swiss National Exhibition in 1964 and 1971 and the BIO5 gold medal in Ljubljana in 1973.
