She attended the Pennington Seminary when it was a collegiate institute for women, earned a Methodist Episcopal studies diploma, and was the valedictorian of her class in 1859. She married Rev. Stephen L. Baldwin in April of 1862. She was a real daughter of the manse, and by the time she had written \*\*\*Must the Chinese Go \*\*\* she had been a missionary in China for 18 years. But the Northern Christian Advocate reviewed her work in irritation, criticizing that 'portions of it are only stinging and bold satire.' Baldwin cites, sometimes with tongue in cheek, the arguments against Chinese immigration that are often lobbed against other groups of immigrants that have also attempted to enter the US: that they are of a lower class, will bring disease, they don't pay taxes, they cheapen labor, and fail to assimilate. Cries against Chinese immigration began in response to the development of the transcontinental railroad which saw the arrival of Chinese immigrants, exploited as cheap labor. The first restrictive Act passed on May 6, 1882, and was the start of a series of increasingly more restrictive laws against Chinese, such as the Act to Prohibit the Coming of Chinese Persons into the United States, known more popularly as the Geary Act of May 1892. It wasn't until the Immigration Act of October 1965 when the exclusionary practices were lifted, despite President Truman's signing of the Act to Repeal the Chinese Exclusion Acts, to Establish Quotas and for Other Purposes in December of 1943.…

Very good. - A total of three letters, the first two of which are penned by the American author Faith Baldwin and are addressed to her friend Rabbi Kurt L. Metzger. The first is a 3-page letter, consisting of over 270 words penned by Faith Baldwin on three sides of two sheets of her 7-3/4 inch high by 5-3/4 inch wide light blue personal stationery. In her letter dated April 20, 1973, Baldwin writes to the Rabbi & Mrs. Metzger, "How lovely of you to remember me! I hope you had a Joyous Passover - and that you're happy in Blue River." She mentions having had cataract surgery back in 1970 and that "I went back to work in April 1971. That NOVEL One More Time was published in 72 & there will be one this coming July - No Bed of Roses - & I just finished one for the Winter of 1974!" That novel, "Time and the Hour" was published on January 1, 1974. She mentions that her vision is all right but that she tires easily and finds reading hard. She mentions that "The old books are now coming out in uniform paper backs (Warner Paperback Library) - since Jan 72 - one a month . I meant to tell you a very old book of mine came out in Israel." She closes by wishing them a lovely spring. Signed "Faith". Folded for mailing, else fine with the original mailing envelope. The second is a one-and-a-half page letter, consisting of over 105 words penned on both sides of her 7-3/4 inch high by 5-3/4 inch wide light blue personal stationery. In her letter dated Dec. 21, [1974], Faith Baldwin writes to Rabbi & Mrs. Metzger, opening her letter with pleasantries ".see Rabbi's a glutton for work whereas I spent 73 trying to survive. - (Why?) - I finished a book in March." Her novel "New Girl in Town" was published on January 1, 1975. She concludes with "I have run out of paper, good pens, energy (mine) stamps (almost) and of course patience." Signed "Faith / (Any Variety of)". Folded for mailing, else near fine with the original mailing envelope. [Together with]: An Autograph letter signed by the last Rabbi of Nuremberg Rabbi Kurtz L. Metzger to Faith Baldwin's daughter. Over 350 words penned on both sides of his personal 10-7/8 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide stationery. Responding to a brief mailgram he received from Hervey on March 19th informing him of her mother Faith Baldwin's death, Rabbi Kurt L. Metzger writes a lengthy consoling letter dated March 21, 1978: "Though it is always bitter and painful to loose [sic] a dear one and especially a mother such as yours, I do hope that after the initial experience of her passing away a feeling of gratitude will replace your emotions of sorrow. For the last two years must have been for your mother a horrible period of frustration since she was no longer able to live a life of independence." He describes how she has been relieved of her pain and frustration at "no longer being able to use her God-given gift of being productive in the literary field in which she has secured for herself the immortality of an extremely beloved and highly appreciated author." He hopes that although her mother has passed, they will stay in touch "and continue a relationship which I enjoyed with your mother so much over the years." Signed "Kurt". The American author of romance novels and other fiction, Faith Baldwin (1893-1978) often wrote of women juggling careers and family enabling working women of all ages to identify with her characters. As a youth, Baldwin lived for two years in Europe, living in Dresden with one of her mother's close friends while the First World War was raging. She learned German and went to cooking school before returning to the U.S. in 1916. She began working for the War Camp Community Service where she met her future husband. A friend of Faith Baldwin, Rabbi Kurt L. Metzger (1909-1992) was born in Nuremberg and was the Rabbi of Landau from 1935 to 1938. He was arrested while attending the Jewish Theological Seminary and incarcerated at the Buchenwald concentration camp for months but eventually released to serve as the Rabbi of Nuremberg. Metzger immigrated to the United States in 1940, serving as Rabbi of Temple Beth El in Glen Falls, New York. The last Rabbi of Nuremberg, he returned to visit Germany several times after he was and was named the Honorary Rabbi of his former native town of Nuremberg in 1977.…

First edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the first blank, "To my friend Mrs Oliver Crane from Esther E. Baldwin, 1218 Pacific St, Brooklyn, Jan. 1902". Crane was an accomplished musician, a keen traveller, and a member of several New England societies, including the American Oriental Society. Esther E. Baldwin (1840-1910), known to contemporaries as the "Chinese Champion" because of her advocacy for Chinese immigrants in the United States, served in Fuzhou as a missionary throughout the 1860s and 1870s. In The Chinese Book of Etiquette, she offered the first adaptation into English of the Nu Jie by Ban Zhao (c.45-120 CE), a leading Han dynasty literatus. The daughter of the court historian Ban Biao, Ban enjoyed a privileged education at a time when the majority of Han women were not given formal tutoring in the classics. Her Nu Jie, written to prepare her daughters and nieces for life, was a cornerstone of Confucian thought for 2,000 years. Drawing from ideas contained in the Confucian Li Ji (Classic of Rites), it stressed the virtues of obedience and self-sacrifice: "All girls, everywhere, first should learn to cultivate virtue. Of cultivating virtue's methods, the most important is to be pure and upright in morals" (p. 1). After the death of her brother, Ban Gu, Ban completed his Han Shu (Book of Han), the standard official history of the Western Han Dynasty. Sibylla Bailey Crane (born Sibylla Adelaide Bailey, 1851-1902) was actively involved in many learned societies and co-founded the Castilian Club, a women's study group based in Boston. Together with her husband, Revd Oliver Crane, she collected art and antiquities, donating several pieces to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She died suddenly in the same month as she received this copy, likely having returned from visiting the author at her Pacific Street house in Brooklyn. Octavo.
