The unequivocal placement of the whole of psychiatry within medicine carries the obligation to compete on equal terms for scarce resources. The assumption and methods of general health care planning have tended to be applied also to the mental health services. Yet the analogy with general health care systems is misleading and has already led to a national plan for the mental hospitals in England and Wales based on an inadequate and erroneous conception of the problem. Planning methods for the special problems of the mental health services have not been developed far enough and the requisite information has not been available for balanced and practical development to take place other than on a local and ad hoc basis. The work, which is derived from many earlier published accounts, begins with a short and highly sentimental biography of the famous American explorer Elisha Kane (whose own works are reissued in this series). It continues with the geography of the Arctic regions, and the voyages of the Vikings and early modern explorers, describing the activities of the whaling fleets as well as the oceanographic and scientific researches of the naval expeditions from many countries seeking the North-West Passage. This is a useful and readable synthesis, which ends with a stirring appeal to the British Admiralty to resume the work of polar exploration which had gone into decline after the end of the official search for Sir John Franklin.…

Volume I is then followed by seven plates; Volume II contains three further plates; Volume III contains five further plates; and Volumes IV and V contain four additional plates each. Collated, complete. An extensive twentieth-century edition of The Newgate Calendar. Originally appearing as a monthly bulletin of executions by the Keeper of London's Newgate Prison, the title was appropriated by a number of publishers in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, who released numerous macabre chapbooks on notorious criminals of the time. Edited by J. L. Rayner and G. T. Crook, the present work compiles writings from a range of sources, including the notable, previously compiled collection of Andrew Knapp and William Baldwin.
