Very scarce, limited to an unknown number, this copy numbered 151.Illustrated with a photographic frontispiece, seven p…hotographic plates, and some in-text graphs and diagrams.Collated, complete.This 1935 expedition Cave Diving Group was a pioneering exploration of the Wookey Hole Caves, the first successful Cave Diving expedition in Britain.The cave dive was undertaken by Jack Sheppard and Graham Balcombe, who both contributed to this faithful log recounting their expedition.This log provides a scientific and vivid description of the diver's exploration. The text includes their observations on each day, what they discovered, and an interesting note on the text of the expedition.Wookey Hole Caves have been used by humans for around 45,000 years, with Palaeolithic tools and fossilised animals found in them, and evidence of occupation of the caves from the Stone and Iron Age and into Roman Britain.With a foreword by Herbert Balch. Balch was an important archaeologist who explored the caves of Mendip Hills, and pioneered many techniques for modern caving. He led excavations at Wooley from 1904 to 1914. In 1912 he found a 1000 year old skeleton in the caves, which is rumoured to be the legendary Witch of Wookey Hole.Collated from Jisc from a copy held at the University of Cambridge Libraries.
