Softcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. First edition. FIVE ONLY of what was intended to be seven stapled pamphlets in box as issued. Lacking pamphlets number 3 & 7. Each story is written by Bond, and illustrated by Sendak, and each is fine and probably unread in heavily worn box that has been taped and doodled upon. Presumably of use to fill in a broken set.

First editions, first printings. "The tales deal with conflicts children face, particularly in regard to bullying and physical violence. Sendak, then a self-taught artist in his late twenties just beginning to try his hand at illustration, supplied the cover art and several line vignettes. One imagines that Sendak's parents were very happy to hear about his Seven Stories gig. Sendak was born in 1928 in Brooklyn, to Polish Jewish parents. As a child, he was keenly aware of what was happening in Europe during the Second World War. Much of his mother's family had emigrated and been saved from the Holocaust, but his father's family hadn't fared as well. It is said that as a teenager, Sendak pored over old photographs of his lost relatives. He told the New York Times in 2006, 'The Holocaust has run like a river of blood through all my books.' The fact that one of his first real paying jobs as an artist was a series of pamphlets for the ADL cannot be surprising in this context" (Rebecca Rego Barry, Rare Books Uncovered: True Stories of Fantastic Finds in Unlikely Places, 2018, pp. 88-89). Institutionally uncommon: WorldCat locates sets at only seven international holdings (all in the US); none listed on Library Hub among British and Irish institutional libraries. Hanrahan A15. Seven volumes, duodecimo. Original printed wrappers, wire-stitched as issued. With the original box. Each volume with cover illustration and vignette line drawings by Maurice Sendak. Box a little rubbed and showing light signs of handling, blue ballpoint pen inscriptions on base (reproducing signatures from the Hollywood Walk of Fame, including "Marilon Monrow"). A couple of marks to covers, contents foxed. A very good set.

Vintage reference photograph from the 1927 French silent film, a fourth wall breaking moment featuring actors Josephine Baker and Adolphe Cande. With manuscript pencil annotations on the verso. A beautiful, lonely islander falls in love with a visiting French engineer, unaware of his forthcoming nuptials to a wealthy French woman. The feature film debut of the then-21-year-old Baker, whose successful performance led to starring roles in "Zouzou" (1934) and "Princess Tam Tam" (1935). Set on the fictional colony of Monte Puebla. 9.5 x 7 inches. Near Fine.
