Thick 4to, original gilt-lettered green cloth, t.e.g.; two sections of front edge of Volume I heavily abraded, only slightly effecting the margins of a few pages, hinges of volume II just starting. Boston: Little Brown and Company, 1884. First Edition. Internally near fine, a very good set. Baird, "described what he saw and in such fashion that no subsequent observer had any doubt as to what he meant. Persistance in accuracy is the foundation of the "Baird School" in ornithology." DAB I, 514.

Volume II: 590 pages plus index. Volume III: 560 pages plus indexes. Illustrated with drawings, some in color. The pages are slightly darkened with age but clean and tight. A few pages have tiny edge tears. Rear hinges on two of the books are split but holding. Covers are rubbed and worn at corners. Top and bottom of spines are frayed. Print on the spines if faded but readable. Ex-Library.

First Edition. "[An] authoritative work dealing with the life-histories and habits of the land birds of North America north of Mexico" (Casey Wood), including Greenland and Alaska. Baird and Ridgway supplied the descriptive parts of the work while Brewer dealt with the habits of the birds. Theodore N.Gill contributed the part of the introduction which explains the difference between the bird group and other vertebrates and, E.Coues tabulated orders and families and added a glossary of technical terms in Vol. III.
