First U.K. Edition. Octavo. 22cm. Publisher's bright royal blue cloth titled in gilt and blind to spine and front board. 324pp. Light bumping to corners and some trivial scuffing of the cloth, bright, strong and tight. Internally clean, with a color frontispiece and 31 additional plates, some in color. Lacks dustjacket. A very good copy indeed. The Rev. James Baikie was considered one of the leading authorities on papyri as historical artefacts, and of the material as a contemporary writing medium. Baikie held a fascination for the ancient world and wrote a number of titles ranging between academically inclined works like this title, and the "Peeps at Many Lands" (for which his wife Constance once again supplied many of the illustrations) series, which was mainly concerned with reframing ancient history and archaeology for engaged juvenile audiences in the period prior to WW1.
