The first edition.Illustrated beautifully with a hand-coloured frontispiece, seventeen hand-coloured plates, and three monochrome plates.Collated, complete.Charles David Badham's well received treatise on the edible fungi found in England. At the time this work was published eating wild fungi was considered to be dangerous and eccentric in England; Badham's work helped to de-mystify fungi. It appears that Badham became interested in foraging fungi whilst visiting markets in Italy.The colour plates are by the noted mycological illustrator Anna Maria Hussey.Prior owner's gift inscription to the verso of the front endpaper, 'Aunt Caroline, with J. C's many kind regards, Ottery St Mary July 1852'. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, cloth is faded to the spine and extremities of the boards. Cracks to the spine, resulting in a little loss of cloth and a little lifting to the rear joint, including a little loss to the tail of the spine. Light rubbing to the boards. A few minor marks to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Front hinge is starting but firm. Prior owner's gift inscription to the verso of the front endpaper. Internally, binding is strained, with some pages detaching, including the title page. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with some spots and handling marks, including the occasional light spot to the plates. Good. book.

First appearing in 1847, this is the second edition, edited by Frederick Currey, which appeared after the author's death. This work quickly attracted popularity, since eating wild fungi was considered dangerous in general opinion.Charles David Badham was an important mycologist, physician and writer. Two species of fungi have been named for him,BadhamiaandBadhamiopsis. He also penned works on insects and cerebral disease.Bound in the publisher's lovely original cloth with gilt fungi to the front board.Illustrated with twelve plates in colour to the rear of the work; collated, complete. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally very smart, with just a little bumping to the extremities. Internally generally firmly bound, with front hinge a little strained but remaining firm, as well as a little strained to pages 32 and 33. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the occasional spot throughout. Plates have pencil annotations from a prior owner to them. Very Good Indeed. book.
