Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Natural Computing is the field of research that investigates both human-designed computing inspired by nature and computing taking place in nature, i.e., it investigates models and computational techniques inspired by nature and also it investigates phenomena taking place in nature in terms of information processing.Examples of the first strand of research covered by the handbook include neural computation inspired by the functioning of the brain; evolutionary computation inspired by Darwinian evolution of species; cellular automata inspired by intercellular communication; swarm intelligence inspired by the behavior of groups of organisms; artificial immune systems inspired by the natural immune system; artificial life systems inspired by the properties of natural life in general; membrane computing inspired by the compartmentalized ways in which cells process information; and amorphous computing inspired by morphogenesis. Other examples of natural-computing paradigms are molecular computing and quantum computing, where the goal is to replace traditional electronic hardware, e.g., by bioware in molecular computing. In molecular computing, data are encoded as biomolecules and then molecular biology tools are used to transform the data, thus performing computations. In quantum computing, one exploits quantum-mechanical phenomena to perform computations and secure communications more efficiently than classical physics and, hence, traditional hardware allows.The second strand of research covered by the handbook, computation taking place in nature, is represented by investigations into, among others, the computational nature of self-assembly, which lies at the core of nanoscience, the computational nature of developmental processes, the computational nature of biochemical reactions, the computational nature of bacterial communication, the computational nature of brain processes, and the systems biology approach to bionetworks where cellular processes aretreated in terms of communication and interaction, and, hence, in terms of computation.We are now witnessing exciting interaction between computer science and the natural sciences. The inside of the back cover is illustrated with a beautiful unsigned illustration, clearly inspired or produced by one of the members of 'De Stijl'. 32x 25 cm. Original illustrated paper wrappers. Extensively illustrated throughout with art-deco and proto-surrealist fashion plates and avant-garde advertisements by Magritte and Sterne Stevens, some tipped-in plates as well as many photo's of the Exposition des Arts Decoratif in London of 1925. Text in French. Rarity & Historical Context: Published at the absolute nexus of the Belgian surrealist movement, Psyché was an ultra-exclusive, short-lived luxury periodical financed by the legendary Brussels haute-couture house Norine (Paul-Gustave Van Hecke and Honorine Dechrijver). In 1925, a young René Magritte was employed as their primary commercial designer. While Magritte's iconic covers for issues like N° 14 ("Thé pour deux") are highly documented, this specific mid-summer issue—N° 18, Juillet 1925—remains virtually unrecorded in modern bibliographies and is completely absent from international auction records. It captures Magritte at a pivotal, transitional moment in July 1925, just months before he broke away from commercial Art Deco to paint his first true surrealist masterpiece, Le Jockey perdu. Magritte's Contributions: • The Cover: A striking, pristine, highly abstract, proto-surrealist composition designed entirely by Magritte, featuring his signature 'Magritte' printed in the plate and decorated with tipped in plate by Magritte himself. • The Interior: Contains 4 further sophisticated signed full-page illustrations and possibly more unsigned advertisements, and typographical layouts executed by Magritte (he was the main designer for this periodical). Condition Report: The book is in fine condition. Rarely preserved outside of institutional archives, this loose issue has escaped the usual defects associated with 1920s periodicals: • Wrappers: Clean, vibrant, and entirely untrimmed, with no chipping or splitting at the spine. Some minimal traces of use, e.g. the letters of the issue stamp are slightly fade, there is a light white stain on the top left of the front cover (see photo's). • Internals: Clean and crisp. No foxing, no water staining, and no rusting to the original staples. • Completeness: 100% complete.
