Trade paperback. Zustand: Very good. Judith Bromley (Front and back photographs) (illustrator). The format is approximately 5.5 inches by 9 inches. 143, [1] pages. Illustrated cover. Illustrations. Selected Bibliography. Index. Some sticker residue on the back cover. Contents include Foreword, Preface, Introduction, U.S. Sites, U.S. Map, International Sites, Suggested Itineraries, and Archives. The editor was a consultant to the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy, who held masters degrees in art history and journalism. Professor Jack Quinan of SUNY Buffalo provided an enthralling Introduction. Frank Lloyd Wright (June 8, 1867 - April 9, 1959) was an American architect, designer, writer, and educator. He designed more than 1,000 structures over a creative period of 70 years. Wright played a key role in the architectural movements of the twentieth century, influencing architects worldwide through his works and hundreds of apprentices in his Taliesin Fellowship. Wright believed in designing in harmony with humanity and the environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. This philosophy was exemplified in Fallingwater (1935), which has been called "the best all-time work of American architecture." As America's most beloved architect, Frank Lloyd Wright's work, life, and legacy, have been the subject of countless exhibitions and publications. Through his poetic treatment of space, plan, light, and materials, Wright revolutionized American architecture. His buildings broke free of the Arts and Crafts movement, establishing him as one of the preeminent modernists of the twentieth century, and continue to thrill a wide-ranging audience of architects and nonarchitects alike. Wright Sites-one of our best-selling titles-is a complete catalog of all of Wright's extant, visitable buildings in the United States. In addition to regional maps and suggested weekend- and day-trip itineraries, this handy-to-use guide contains descriptions and visitation information for more than 60 projects. This new updated and revised edition introduces seven sites that have been made available to the public for the first time. Third Revised Edition [stated]. Third printing [stated].

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. Paul Morse (Front and Back DJ photographs) (illustrator). First edition, second printing. xi, [1],596 pages. Illustrations. Notes. Index. Inscribed by the Author on title page. Karl Christian Rove (born December 25, 1950) is an American Republican political consultant and policy advisor. He was Senior Advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff during the George W. Bush administration until Rove's resignation on August 31, 2007. He has also headed the Office of Political Affairs, the Office of Public Liaison, and the White House Office of Strategic Initiatives. Since leaving the White House, Rove has worked as a political analyst and contributor for Fox News, Newsweek and The Wall Street Journal. Prior to his White House appointments, he is credited with the 1994 and 1998 Texas gubernatorial victories of George W. Bush, as well as Bush's 2000 and 2004 successful presidential campaigns. In his 2004 victory speech Bush referred to Rove as "the Architect". Rove has also been credited for the successful campaigns of John Ashcroft (1994 U.S. Senate election), Bill Clements (1986 Texas gubernatorial election), Senator John Cornyn (2002 U.S. Senate election), Governor Rick Perry (1990 Texas Agriculture Commission election), and Phil Gramm (1982 U.S. House and 1984 U.S. Senate elections).Shortly after leaving the White House, Rove was hired to write about the 2008 Presidential Election for Newsweek. He was also later hired as a contributor for the Wall Street Journal and a political analyst for Fox News. Rove was an informal advisor to 2008 Republican Presidential candidate John McCain, and donated $2, 300 to his campaign. From the moment he set foot on it, Karl Rove has rocked America's political stage. He ran the national College Republicans at twenty-two, and turned a Texas dominated by Democrats into a bastion for Republicans. He launched George W. Bush to national renown by unseating a popular Democratic governor, and then orchestrated a GOP White House win at a time when voters had little reason to throw out the incumbent party. For engineering victory after unlikely victory, Rove became known as "the Architect." Because of his success, Rove has been attacked his entire career, accused of everything from campaign chicanery to ideological divisiveness. In this frank memoir, Rove responds to critics, passionately articulates his political philosophy, and defends the choices he made on the campaign trail and in the White House. He addresses controversies head-onâ" from his role in the contest between Bush and Senator John McCain in South Carolina to the charges that Bush misled the nation on Iraq. In the course of putting the record straight, Rove takes on Democratic leaders who acted cynically or deviously behind closed doors, and even Republicans who lacked backbone at crucial moments. Courage and Consequence is also the first intimate account from the highest level at the White House of one of the most headline-making presidencies of the modern age. Rove takes readers behind the scenes of the bitterly contested 2000 presidential contest, of tense moments aboard Air Force One on 9/11, of the decision to go to war in Afghanistan and Iraq, of the hard-won 2004 reelection fight, and even of his painful three years fending off an indictment by Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald. In the process, he spells out what it takes to win elections and how to govern successfully once a candidate has won. Rove is candid about his mistakes in the West Wing and in his campaigns, and talks frankly about the heartbreak of his early family years. But Courage and Consequence is ultimately about the joy of a life committed to the conservative cause, a life spent in political combat and service to country, no matter the costs.

  • Bild des Verkäufers für Earth First! The Radical Environmental Journal. Eostar. March-April 2009. Volume 29, Number 3 zum Verkauf von Ken Sanders Rare Books, ABAA

Magazine. Zustand: Near Fine. 32pp. Newsprint [43cm x 28cm / 17" x 11"]. Eight bifolia (sheets folded vertically once to form thirty-two pages). Horizontal crease throughout, as issued (folded for distribution). Printed in color. Some light age toning near edges and folds. Some soft bumps and creases. Else, a nice clean and bright copy. "No Compromise in Defense of Mother Earth!" - Earth First! Earth First! is a group of radical environmentalists that formed in the American Southwest in the spring of 1980, founded by Dave Foreman, Mike Roselle, Howie Wolke, Bart Koehler, and Ron Kezar, among others. Earth First! quickly came to national attention with their "cracking" of Glen Canyon Dam activist stunt, which was performed and filmed in the spring of 1981. Edward Abbey is considered to be the "literary father" of the group, and the monkey wrench is their ever-present emblem and tool. "Earth First! is the beginning of the new, bold environmental movement. And 'Earth First! The Radical Environmental Journal' is its voice" (Dave Foreman, 1980s). The late-1980s and early-1990s were a tumultuous time for Earth First! Law enforcement cracked down on its members, and various internal issues and factions began to form within the group. Earth First! embraced non-hierarchical structures and organic methods of organization and growth, while continuing to focus on direct action in defense of wilderness as its primary focus. Through the 1990's, 2000's, and 2010's, the journal continued to be published in various forms under the direction of a diverse and rotating collective of voices from within the broad Earth First! movement. Regular print publication of the Earth First! Journal under this title seems to have ceased sometime in the early 2020s, though the movement still survives and maintains a presence online and on social media. Front cover (half-page, folded) illustration by Hungry Knife shows colorful animal cartoon characters preparing for the "EF! Roadshow" and corresponds with the feature article (on page 13) "Gearing Up for the EF! Roadshow." Rear cover photograph by Miranda Gibson is captioned "The banner hang above the Triabunna mill that turns old-growth forests into woodchips." Cover articles: "Defending an Old-Growth Swamp and Fighting Infrastructure in South Florida" by Everglades Earth First! and "Civilian Uprising Against Barrick God in Tanzania" by Sakura Saunders. Other articles include: "Kingston Power Plant: Toxic Waste Spill in Tennessee" by James Jameson, "Sprawling Suburban Madness in South Florida!" by Swamp LIlly and Sparkle Berry, "No a las Minas!" by Root Force, "Mexican Leather Expo Burned" by The MDA, "Two Russian Activists Killed by Assassin in Moscow" by Donny, "Animal Defense and Earth Defense: Compassionate Bedfellows" by Mike Jaynes, "Confronting Liberalism and Privilege in Our Movements" by Michael Novick, amongst others. "Armed With Visions" poetry on page 23. Many photographs and illustrations throughout. Advertisements at the rear.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Doris Harkness;front And Back Cover Art;Book And Cover Design By Lauren Grosskopf (illustrator). Neuware - The Law of the Unforeseen is about family, history, family history, the natural world-its beauty, its degradation-the strange miracle of consciousness. I write about the blues, failure, great apes, time passing, icebergs, massage therapy, the Civil War, crows, bats, potatoes, spoons and drones. Nothing is off the table. In fact, everything is on the table, including the fabled kitchen sink. The poet Galway Kinnell once said that when writing a poem, the deeper you go inside yourself, and the more intimate you become in the process of composing and engaging language with your whole being, a strange thing happens. The poem, Kinnell said, becomes both personal and universal. By diving deep, the poem discovers-or uncovers-what binds us, what we all feel: the quickened heart of recognition and shared emotions. That's what I've aimed for in The Law of the Unforeseen: to plumb deep, to find 'the best words in their best order,' as Samuel Taylor Coleridge said in his famous distinction between prose ('?words in the best order.') and poetry '?the best words in the best order').

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. Bob Malone (Front cover photo), Larry Boyd (Back c (illustrator). 395, [5] pages. Maps. Illustrations. Notes. Glossary of Organizations and Spanish Terms. Bibliography. Index. Signed by author on the fep. The author, a journalist who lived in Nicaragua from 1983 to 1991, reveals the truth about the first American killed by the CIA-backed Contras--an idealistic young engineer from Oregon whose efforts to make the country more self sufficient made him a target. Kruckewitt visited Guatemala in 1980 for an undergraduate program, but the program was canceled due to the extent of political violence in the country at that timeKruckewitt described seeing the bodies of assassination victims in two separate incidents in a single week. From 1983 to 1991, Kruckewitt lived in Nicaragua, reporting on the Contra War for ABC Radio. In 1989, Kruckewitt traveled to Panama and reported on the U.S. invasion of that country. Kruckewitt had known Linder personally, meeting him on several occasions when they both worked in Nicaragua. In 1995, assisted by fellow journalist Paul Berman, she located and interviewed a Contra who claimed to have been involved in Linder's killing and in 1999 she published the first biography of Linder. Noam Chomsky described the book as "a poignant and gripping tale," The University of Oregon archives contain a Ben Linder collection that includes drafts and outlines of The Death of Ben Linder, recordings of interviews Kruckewitt conducted while researching the book, and correspondence Kruckewitt maintained with the archives. In 1987, the death of Ben Linder, the first American killed by President Reagan's "freedom fighters" -- the U.S.-backed Nicaraguan Contras -- ignited a firestorm of protest and debate. In this landmark first biography of Linder, investigative journalist Joan Kruckewitt tells his story. In the summer of 1983, a 23-year-old American named Ben Linder arrived in Managua with a unicycle and a newly earned degree in engineering. In 1986, Linder moved from Managua to El Cuá, a village in the Nicaraguan war zone, where he helped form a team to build a hydroplant to bring electricity to the town. He was ambushed and killed by the Contras the following year while surveying a stream for a possible hydroplant. In 1993, Kruckewitt traveled to the Nicaraguan mountains to investigate Linder's death. In July 1995. she finally located and interviewed one of the men who killed Ben Linder, a story that became the basis for a New Yorker feature on Linder's death. Linder's story is a portrait of one idealist who died for his beliefs, as well as a picture of a failed foreign policy, vividly exposing the true dimensions of a war that forever marked the lives of both Nicaraguans and Americans. Illustrations. Autographed copy sticker on front of DJ. Signed, with sentiment, by the author on the front free endpaper; signature reads Enjoy the Book! Jeff Seidel. This book provides a look at what a number of former Orioles have done after their playing careers ended. The author spoke with a wide-ranging number of Orioles. from stars like Cal Ripken Jr. and Brooks Robinson to those who had only 15 minutes of fame, like Dave Criscione and John Stefero. The author notes how many of the former Orioles stayed in baseball in some form, like Cal Ripken, who started his own minor league team in Aberdeen, Maryland, or former catcher Andy Etchebarren, a longtime empire's attendant. For many, their experience on the diamond became a launching point for their post-playing careers as coaches and managers; for others, their association with the Orioles simply blessed them as their careers took twists and turns away from the field of play. For all, the proud tradition of Orioles baseball has woven itself into the fabric of their everyday lives. The author interviewed 35 former Orioles players and one umpire attendant for this book. Jeff Seidel has been a journalist in the Baltimore/Washington area for over 20 years, covering high school, college, and professional sports. He has written for the Baltimore Sun, Washington Post, the Associated Press, NFLdotcom, Lacrosse Magazine, ESPN: The Magazine, Rink Side, Washington Jewish Week, and many other publications. He is the author of Baltimore Orioles: Where Have You Gone? Where Have You Gone? Baltimore Orioles is a look at what a number of former Orioles have done after their playing careers have ended. Author Jeff Seidel spoke with a wide-ranging number of Orioles from stars like Cal Ripken Jr. and Brooks Robinson to those who had only 15 minutes of fame like Dave Criscione and John Stefero. Also featured are Andy Etchebarren, Chris Hoiles, Mike Flanagan, the Cy Young award-winning lefty who anchored the Orioles pitching staff in the late 1970s and 1980s; Tommy Davis, the team's first designated hitter; Doug DeCinces, faced with the cruel task of taking over for Brooks Robinson at third base, and Brooks Robinson himself, still a fan favorite nearly 30 years after retiring.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. Arthur Elgort (Front and Back jacket photographs) (illustrator). First Edition [stated], Second Printing. xii, 308 pages. Illustrations (some in color, some nude). Index. Boldly signed by the author on the fep. Janice Doreen Dickinson (born February 16, 1955) is an American model, television personality, and businesswoman. Initially notable as a model, Dickinson has been disputably described by herself as the first supermodel. (Lisa Fonssagrives is widely considered to have been the world's first supermodel, with a career that began in the 1930s.) One of the most successful models of the 1970s and 1980s, she also served as a judge on four cycles of the reality series America's Next Top Model (20032006). Dickinson opened a modeling agency in 2005 which was documented on the reality series The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency (20062008). In 2007, Dickinson was a contestant on the seventh series of the British television show I'm a Celebrity.Get Me Out of Here! which she finished as runner-up. In 2008, she starred on the reality series Janice & Abbey, alongside British model Abbey Clancy. In 2010, Dickinson appeared on the fourth series of Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, and in 2015, she appeared on Celebrity Big Brother 16. Dickinson has released three autobiographical books: No Lifeguard on Duty (2002), Everything About Me Is Fake And I'm Perfect (2004), and Check Please! Dating, Mating, and Extricating (2006). The life of Janice Dickinson is a story of extremes: uncontrolled energy, mad self-confidence and crushing insecurity, a boundless appetite for life and a ceaseless drive to self-destruct. During the 1970s she was the first lush-lipped, long-stemmed, dark-eyed brunette to break through and become not just a model but a supermodel -- a term she coined for herself. She graced major magazine covers from Vogue to Elle to Cosmopolitan, in photographs by Avedon and Irving Penn and fashions by Versace and Calvin Klein. She was voracious in everything: affairs both passionate and casual, endless partying, and a drug habit that dogged her through twenty years and three husbands. She spent her glory days with Gia Carangi and Christie Brinkley and her nights with Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson, and Sylvester Stallone. And wherever she went, Janice captured the imagination of everyone who encountered her. Yet the tale Janice Dickinson has lived to tell is no mere diva cartoon. For the haunting undercurrent in her life is a violent dance of cruelty and abuse with her own father -- a story she tells here for the first time. And as she careens from runway to rehab to rock bottom to recovery, readers will be captivated by her tale of survival . . . and by its cautionary power for anyone who still believes that fashion -- or life -- is an easy business. No Lifeguard on Duty: The Accidental Life of the World's First Supermodel is an autobiography by fashion model, photographer, author and talent agent Janice Dickinson. The author's friend make-up artist Way Bandy advised her to begin putting her past experiences down on paper as a form of therapy from prior trauma in her life. After gaining sobriety, she started compiling her notes into book format. She contacted book publisher Judith Regan who agreed to help her publish her book after hearing her tale on the phone, without first seeing a writing sample. In November 2014, Dickinson asserted in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that pressure from Bill Cosby and his lawyers resulted in the removal of an account of sexual assault and rape by Cosby when she visited him at a hotel in Lake Tahoe, California in 1982. After Cosby's attorney disputed this account, she reappeared on the program to proclaim she was telling the truth and explained she was speaking out publicly because of a need to be heard and to represent other women who stated they experienced a similar trauma. The book recounts Dickinson's early life where she states she experienced child abuse from her father, and moves forward describing her experiences throughout her career as a model. Dickinson explains her struggle with substance dependence upon drugs and alcohol during her career. The author discusses her time as a representative for companies including Virginia Slims, Max Factor, and Hush Puppies; and her success appearing on the covers of magazines including: Vogue, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, and Cosmo. While performing work as a model she takes the time to gain knowledge about the craft of photography and fashion. Dickinson describes how she originated the term "supermodel". No Lifeguard on Duty cautions about the tendency towards insecurity in celebrity culture. No Lifeguard on Duty received a favorable reception from multiple publications. Film rights to the book were purchased by Warner Bros. in 2004. Women's Wear Daily praised the author's comedic style in the work. Knight Ridder Newspapers wrote positively of the author's courage at describing difficult experiences from her past. The New York Observer found the writing style of the book to have a good flow throughout. Publishers Weekly wrote: "Dickinson comes across as a triumphant survivor." Dickinson's book had a positive impact on her career. Because of reading the book, Tyra Banks decided to bring Dickinson on board as a judge on her new program America's Next Top Model in 2003. Dickinson served as a judge on the program for a total of four seasons before being replaced by Twiggy. Oxygen Network subsequently hired her for its new program centered on the author's efforts to start her own company; the program launched in 2006 titled: The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency.

Trade paperback. Zustand: Good. Ogden Pleissner (Art work on front and back covers (illustrator). Fourth Printing [Stated}. The format is approximately 8.5 inches by 11 inches. viii, 344 pages. Illustrated cover. Illustrations. Maps. Notes. Index. Cover has some wear and soiling. Author inscription on the half-title page. Inscription reads To Lara Henry Baker with Best Wishes JHC Anchorage, AK 13 Aug 05. John Haile Cloe, whose encyclopedic knowledge of the military history of Alaska made him the leading expert on World War II in Alaska. Cloe was a student at the Virginia Military Institute prior to joining the Army. He served two tours in Vietnam and was later assigned to the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia. In 1970 he became the Alaska Air Command historian at Elmendorf Air Force Base. His office at Elmendorf contained copious and detailed records of U.S. military actions in Alaska during World War II, when Japan bombed, invaded and occupied parts of the Aleutian Islands, as well as records of the Cold War era. In retirement, he used knowledge he'd acquired on base and information gleaned from repositories outside Alaska to produce fastidious research on the Alaska front. He led tours to Attu Island, the site of the only land battle between American forces and an invading army since the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812. Cloe worked with the National Park Service to preserve the history of Alaska's war years. He completed the first major history of the Battle of the Kurils, a long-running air and sea assault on northern Japan that followed the Battle of Attu. "Mission to the Kurils" was the result of nearly 30 years of research and writing, and constitutes Part II (per vi)--each work stands alone as complete. . This was the personal copy of Dr. Lara H. Baker who held leadership positions at Los Alamos National Laboratory and in the private sector. Lara earned his P.D. from New Mexico State University in 1968, showcasing his commitment to lifelong learning and intellectual pursuits. He was renowned for his expertise in computers. And his work was featured on 60 Minutes. He always worked to celebrate the greatness of our country. No one was more greatly committed to the cause and purpose of this country than Dr. Lara Baker. The Aleutian Campaign occurred during the early years of the war. What was accomplished there has been obscured by time and overshadowed by the more dramatic events of other war theaters. It was the only campaign fought on North American soil during the war. It was primarily an air war where young men battled not only each other, but also the terrible, unforgiving elements of the stormed-tossed, primeval place. The war in the Aleutians has been referred to as the forgotten war, and the terror of the air battles that were fought in the lonely skies unfortunately have not summoned up the power and the glory of other theaters of conflict as so recently expressed in the movie Memphis Belle. However, those who fought there remember. -- Back cover. The Eleventh Air Force (11 AF) is a Numbered Air Force of the United States Air Force Pacific Air Forces (PACAF). It is headquartered at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. Established on 28 December 1941 as the Alaskan Air Force at Elmendorf Field, Alaska Territory. it was initially part of the United States Army Air Forces. It provided air defense of Alaska during World War II and fought in the Aleutian Islands Campaign. It was re-designated as the Alaskan Air Command in late 1945, and became responsible for the air defense of Alaska. Throughout the winter of 1942-1943, the Eleventh Air Force bombed Kiska and Attu whenever possible, although the flyers were extremely handicapped by the almost constant fog which covered the island. At the same time, the bases to the east of Adak were consolidated and built up. In October, the Field Headquarters of the Eleventh Air Force was closed at Kodiak and moved to Davis AAF. A Patrol Wing (PatWing) was a United States Navy aviation unit with the commander of a Patrol Wing known as the Commodore, the ComPatWing or COMPATWING. From 1 November 1942 to 30 June 1973 Patrol Wings were designated "Fleet Air Wings". Fleet Air Wing 4 was established as Patrol Wing 4 at FAB Seattle, Washington (NAS Sand Point, Washington) on 1 October 1937. On 27 May it relocated to NAS Kodiak, Alaska where on 1 November 1942 it was redesignated Fleet Air Wing 4 (FAW-4). On 15 March 1943 it relocated to NAS Adak, Alaska then on 26 April 1944 to NAF Attu, Aleutian Islands. The wing fought in the Aleutian Islands campaign alongside Eleventh Air Force. During the winter of 1943-44, the burden of operations against the Kuriles was carried by Navy Consolidated PBY Catalinas and Lockheed Ventura of Fleet Air Wing Four. They carried small bomb loads and their primary objective was the securing of nighttime reconnaissance photographs. On 17 April 1949 the wing relocated to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington and became dual hatted with Commander Fleet Air (COMFAIR) Seattle with additional duty as FAW-4 in May 1949. On 15 February 1954 COMFAIR Seattle was redesignated COMFAIR Whidbey and FAW-4 (dual hatted). Fleet Air Wing 4 was disestablished on 15 March 1970.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. Michael Maurney (front and back cover photographs) (illustrator). Presumed First Edition, First printing. The format is approximately 11.25 inches by 8.75 inches. Unpaginated (20 pages). Profusely illustrated in color. Colorfully illustrated dust jacket. Inscribed by the author on the fep. The inscription reads To Rebecca + Jonathan Thank You Constance Williams. By the age of eight, Williams painted in various mediums, and sculpted with anything she could lay her hands on. In her early teens, Williams excelled at sculpture and continued painting in multiple mediums. Her 2004 move to Asheville, NC, was the impetus to propel her professional career as a full-time artist. She delved back into sculpture with great success in 2005, and it was her use of waxes in 2006 on a post-fired sculptural work that forayed her into painting with encaustic for the next ten years. In 2015, she added alcohol ink to her repertoire, which she used with her encaustic paint medium. In 2016-current, saw the use of alcohol ink and experimentation on different substrates. Williams's paintings and sculptures are in private and corporate collections and frequently commissioned for many site-specific locations. She has been on the cover and featured in various print publications and filmed by PBS and other US television programs. Encaustic is derived from the Greek word "Enkaien", and translates to "burn into". Molten, pigmented beeswax and damar tree resin, a tree sap that raises the melt point and ultimately hardens the surface that can be buffed and polished to create a shine. When one sees an Encaustic painting, the first things that will strike you is the unique brightness of its colors: it seems to light from within. The light does not get reflected from the surface of the paining, but penetrates the different wax layers and reflects back out, creating depth and a send of movement. Encaustic painting was developed by the Greeks over 3,900 years ago and used by the Egyptians, wax portraits were entombed with the person they represented. Many of these portraits exist today and can be admired and the British Museum in London and the National Museum of Cairo. Over time, and because newer pains such as tempera required neither melting nor fusing, encaustic fell out of favor and dropped out of sight until it was rediscovered in the eighteenth century. Its embrace by Jasper Johns in the mid-twentieth century rebirthed the medium for yet a new millennium of artists. Williams' paintings are interpretations of geological and topographical observations; the essence of their origins extracted and expressed abstractly, implied familiarity composed anew. Williams' unique style flattens perspective with her trademark spherical and striated patterning into a re-imagined rhythmic visual dialogue conveyed throughout her work.
