Hans von Bulow as a Dresden-born conductor and composer; a student of Liszt, he was influential in establishing the reputations of Richard Wagner and Johannes Brahms. He married Liszt's daughter Cosima who later left him for Wagner. These letters are revealing of his early life, about which little else is known, and show his emerging talent and connections.
