About very good. ?he first comprehensive study of parks published in the Soviet Union, this richly illustrated volume covers every aspect of green architecture and landscaping, from theories and concepts, to planning, design of planting, structures and buildings, and engineering considerations. The text is accompanied by 562 numbered illustrations including detailed site plans, photographs, models, elevations, maps, and technical drawings of parks across the Soviet space from Belarus to Turkmenistan, and Ukraine. Parks in many provincial towns, and worker settlements are also included in addition to numerous parks in Moscow and Leningrad. In the introduction the author states his aim to covers a variety of parks, including botanical gardens, zoos, sport parks and recreation areas, as well as waterside leisure areas. A deep engagement with international landscape design is evident in photo illustrations and accompanying analysis of parks in France, Germany, England, and across the United States, in Boston, New York, Minneapolis, Chicago, St. Lous, and St. Petersburg (FL). Aiming to include an international audience, the table of contents and bibliography are also provided in French and English. Little is known about the author, Leonid Lunts, a Soviet urban planner who authored over a dozen monographs and textbooks on landscape architecture, including "The Greening of Cities" (1947), "The Greening of Factory Grounds" (1948), and "Hygiene of Collective Farms: Planning, Architecture, and Greening" (1952). The wrapper design was done by the Constructivist graphic artist Boris Titov (1897-1951), A VKhUTEMAS graduate and one of the most prolific book designers of the early Soviet period whose designs are held by MoMA, among others. As of March 2026, KVK, OCLC show one copy worldwide, in North America.
