Marathwada which was in the erstwhile Nizam State now political and geographical part of the present Maharashtra State is rich in heritage and legacy both in arts and iconography has got the unique distinction of being the holy land of saints and sages. The history of medieval arts and iconography of this region dates back to the prosperous reigns of Chalukyas Rashtrakutas and Yadavas. The present work purports to deal with the ancient and medieval art and sculpture of this neglected and forgotten region. The author strenuously strived in collecting and deciphering the original material identified classified the various icons in conformity with the traditional Pratima lakshana. An attempt has been made to evaluate the icons and the author had taken meticulous and stupendous care in dividing the chapters of the book into Visnu Shiva Shakti and other minor deities. So the chapters are exhaustive and give evidence supported by the images of various monuments. The author has tried his level best to bring the specimens of art found in the area under the subject of his study. The author has made a fairly remarkable study of rare forms like Samhar Murti Gajasurvadha Murti Jeshtadevi Gouri consorts of Visnu which are being reported and brought to light for the first time. The author s claim and his findings Surya wearing a boot Keshava and other icons is unique and magnomopus. He tries to prove the fact that Marathwada is the confluence of north and south. This book highlights for the first time the iconographic study of the temple sculptures of Marathwada. 262 pp.
