Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This novel picks up a few years after the ending of Shadow Partners. Manfred Kurtz is still the Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of ATF's Detroit Field Division, and Angelo Tana is his assistant. The joint ATF Detroit Police Department (DPD) task force continues to work successfully on matters that cross jurisdictional lines. The story begins with a series of brutal murders in three separate States. Seemingly, they are not connected. Local jurisdictions are busy investigating the crimes, with no reason to suspect any relationship to other incidents. When she chances upon a Detroit crime scene, AUSA Janet Evergreen misses being killed by seconds. Although Janet had not witnessed the assassination of a DPD officer, she did take note of the driver of a getaway vehicle-a man who recognized Janet.Manfred Kurtz and the Task Force members become involved after another source reveals facts about another murder. Assigned ATF agents and DPD officers again begin work on what first appears as a simple case. Far from being an elementary, the men and women will become embroiled in political corruption, murder, firearms trafficking and the first (ALPHA) strike against America by a determined terrorist organization.China wants to make inroads into America's love of guns through established firearms' importation procedures. However, the legitimate effort has been subverted by new adversaries from China. Led by a Chinese colonel from the People's Liberation Army and a cabal, consisting of a select group of military and political members of China's elite, a subplot surfaces. Alliances and treacherous activities will quickly pit radical Muslims from Iran, Iraq and China, against Kurtz, the Task Force and Chinese investigators with similar credentials as ATF.Before long, the race is on to identify and neutralize the terrorist group responsible for many dead Americans. The country's law enforcement is stymied on the makeup of the group and where they might strike again. In a bizarre turn of events, ATF becomes the number one target of criticism from all sides of the firearms' issues, and is blamed for the attacks. With the ATF/DPD Task Force morale wavering, even with promising leads in hand, the Director of another agency decides ATF has been mortally wounded. He calculates that the time is right to scrape up the tidbits developed by the Task Force. His agency identified what the group's acronym stands for, and intends to parlay what he has into a chance for significant publicity. Even so, the Director might not have all of the information he requires for success, or does he Faced with having to relinquish the investigation, Manfred Kurtz and Angelo Tana receive a lifeline. It's tossed to them by a Chinese criminal investigator. Colonel Mozi Zemin has come across information vital to the Task Force. However, Kurtz and Tana must travel to Hong Kong where they race to intercept a shipment of weapons of mass destruction.Back in the U.S., the Task Force investigation continues--and so do the assassinations of American citizens. Progress is being made, though. Bit-by-bit, ATF and DPD officers and their support people begin to build a picture of the scope of the terrorist operation. But, just before a national enforcement operation, Washington decides to hold back ATF.Instead, their bosses at the Treasury Department acquiesce to a partial case-takeover by the Departments of Defense and Justice. A small carrier task force will search the Pacific for the arms shipments, while ATF handles the countrywide raids.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Americans want to be reassured their law enforcement agencies are effective in carrying out primary missions that ensure protection wherever possible. This book epitomizes how agencies, with varying missions, can overcome adversity to achieve a common purpose. Several years after special agent Ray St. Giles vanished in West Virginia, Manfred Kurtz is assigned as ATF Detroit's Special Agent in Charge (SAC), and Angelo Tana is his assistant. Both had been Ray's DPD partners before joining ATF. Kurtz is contacted by DPD Deputy Chief Wendell Locke. He wants ATF assistance in finding those responsible for a string of bombings and murders.DPD sergeant Hugh St Giles, Ray's son, and Brian Culbert -- his counterpart at ATF, assemble a compelling team of agents and detectives. Together, they promptly develop leads on the bombings and a W.VA connection. As their case expands in several directions, agents bring in DEA. Now a Task Force, investigators will tie in political corruption, a major gun trafficking ring, stolen military materials, Colombian dope traffickers, and the man responsible for Ray St. Giles' disappearance. However, smack in the middle of the investigation further complications arise. A U.S. Senator and a White House mole strive to manipulate a Congressional subcommittee. Its Chairman struggles with his mandate - find a process to abolish ATF as a law enforcement agency. If successful, seeds for a National Police Force will have been sewn. Strings are being pulled by people with no love of country. Corrupt appointees in Departments of Treasury and Justice, a rogue ATF executive, and remnants of a home-grown terrorist organization - all conspire to bring Federal law enforcement, under a single, powerful agency. As the task force gathers evidence, agents and detectives explore connections to all these divergent angles, leaving Kurtz and his people to sort them out.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Lieutenant, Andre de Avilés is a hard-nosed lawman in charge of Detroit PD's Intel Squad. Born in Spain's Basque Country, the forty-something detective's style is a 'balls-to-the-wall' boldness for suppressing organized crimes. His tenacious methods entail a variety of innovative strategies and tactics that have resulted in a number of well-publicized cases. Nevertheless, for every successful operation he and the squad have pulled off, de Avilés generated new enemies. Mostly, whispered threats came from members of the criminal gangs he and the Intel Squad had dismantled. When a couple sophisticated OCD families tossed out a smattering of bold protests, de Avilés only chuckled, 'Not to worry, it's all a part of the job.'On the other hand, there were other dangers that were a little closer to home. These were his adversaries from inside his own department. A few were jealous of his honesty, integrity, and innate talent to lead dedicated detectives against the worst of the worst-and get the job done. Some resented the manner in which he recruited and treated squad members. All were handpicked and the cream of the crop. They drove the best UC vehicles and used state-of-the-art electronic gear . . . not from DPD . . . but borrowed from Feds who fought to work jointly. Not much went on in the Metro area that LT and the Intel detectives couldn't find in their files. Then there are his contemporaries in other squads-along with a few of their bosses-the brass-hats who prefer policing to run tacitly, inconspicuously . . . under the radar . . . and minus most publicity. Like those old coppers-loaded down with brass and guilt-who fought to hang on to their fiefdoms. Some say a contemporary definition of certain fiefs in Motown was, Grants of position, power, and perks given to one's appointees by heavyweight politicians in exchange for promises of loyalty and service. In DPD, a number of fiefs came with a full complement of detectives, officers, and administrative positions. De Avilés and other dedicated officers and supervisors kept an eye on the up-and-comers who were emulating the old geezers on the upper floors. The conniving old guard was purposely mentoring some of the newer lieutenants. Along with the secret handshake came cushy assignments and access to expensive freebies from benefactors who did business in the rundown ghetto. The spoils from more glamorous venues-like Detroit's casinos and the restaurants, bars and peripheral joints in and around Greektown-would come later rather than sooner. Old fogies can be selfish . . . but they will eventually pull-the-plug and retire, or, drop dead if an unfriendly IRS or FBI agent asks for a sit-down talk. From within this environment, Andre de Avilés embarks upon a joint investigation with his old friend and long ago partner, Brian Culbert. Andre and Brian worked together for a short time, just before Culbert quit the force and signed on with ATF. De Avilés finds it amusing that he and Culbert, along with Hugh St. Giles-their closest friend-have all made it into management positions. As DPD's Chief of Detectives, St. Giles regularly defends his Intel lieutenant-even at the expense of pissing off his own chain of command. In the past, Deputy Chief of Police Richard Simmons had been equal in rank to Andre de Avilés. He never liked the man, especially when Andre's people continually out produced Simmons' squad of detectives. Since his promotion, Simmons and St. Giles engage in persistent skirmishes over Intel operations. Having the Chief of Detectives as your close friend could be extremely valuable when the going got rough.…
