Bigelow, a prominent woollen manufacturer and inventor of many improvements in textile machinery, notably the power-loom for weaving carpets, was a protectionist and played a major role in the framing of the complicated system of duties on wool and woollens adopted by the United States in 1867. In the present work (his best according to Palgrave), he attempted to show that the growth of English commerce was not due to free trade, but to other causes, and that the removal of duties by England had no damaging effect.
