Illustrated with 15 full-page tinted plates. Edition limited to 1500 numbered copies (this is #1363), signed on the limitation leaf by Michael Ayrton. Slipcase with a 1/4" paint spot and extremities of fore-edge chipped & one top joint starting to separate, but still sound. Very good- to very good+ condition.

Original quarter morocco, cloth boards, marbled endpapers by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, printed on hand-made Pachuco Cadava paper from Amalfi. Some general light spotting but a Fine copy. With the Michael Ayrton designed bookplate of Arnold Haskell to the front pastedown. Loosely inserted are 1. original prospectus for the book, 2. letter from the daughter of Martin Shuttleworth, literary critic, writer and editor regarding the provenance of this copy.

[28 May] Ayrton is about to go to America and must "gather all available resources to keep things going here [.] Could I therefore have some of the money owing for the portrait of Constant? All of it would be splendid but even some would help." [7 June] He thanks Mrs Driberg for payment of half. [6 Feb.] "Forgive my bothering you but I am a bit pressed for money at the moment and you still owe me half the price of the Lambert portrait whihc is Twenty Pounds. May I have it?"
