The collected works of John Jewel, an English bishop who was appointed Bishop of Salisbury from 1559 to 1571. Containing a sermon preached at Paul's Cross, correspondence with Dr. Cole, articles of private mass, communion, prayers in a strange tongue, elevation, adoration, and more. Edited by John Eyre, an English evangelical clergyman who helped in establishing some of the major national evangelical institutions for the Parker Society, a text publication society set up in 1841 to produce editions of the works of the early Protestant writers of the English Reformation. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, worn with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Damp staining and the odd small mark to the boards. Loss to the spine label with splits across the spine and to the joints. Amateur repairs to the spine, cloth could detach with further handling. Hinges tender. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot or handling mark. Light age toning to the extremities. Fair. book.

A little light foxing to prelims otherwise contents clean and bright, with no annotation or inscriptions. Overall a very good copy. An early anthology of the Author's primary works; five short narrative accounts together with the first printing of the biography of the Author by his son-in-law John Ayre. Richmond was heavily influenced by William Wilberforce, to whom the work is dedicated, and his tales were based upon experiences of working class parishioners. Scarce, COPAC locates four copies only of this imprint, with none at the BL.
