Né à Odessa en 1825, mort à Paris en 1876 et naturalisé français en 1856, Alexandre Axenfeld (1825-1876) fut l'élève de Jean-Baptiste Bouillaud. Il obtint l'agrégation de médecine avec sa thèse sur les Influences nosocomiales en 1857. Il consacra la plus grande partie de sa carrière à ce traité, qui fut largement augmenté en 1883 (Traité des névroses. Paris, Germer Baillière). Il classait les névroses en trois grandes catégories : névroses de la sensibilité, névroses de la motilité et névroses complexes. Ex-libris au monogramme N.H.
