Name of previous owner written in ink at type of spine. The Goddard Space Flight Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration organized a workshop (held on May 18-22, 1981) centered around three working groups corresponding to the three chapters in this report--a Trace Species Working Group; a Multidimensional Aspects Working Group; and a Trends and Predictions Working Group. Over 100 scientists representing most of the institutions in the world engaged in upper atmospheric research attended the workshop. At the end of the workshop, each working group prepared a summary document, and these have been assembled into this report. The basic theme for the workshop and the report was the comparison of theory and measurement. Appendix A-I, includes, in part: References, Acronyms, Stratospheric Instruments and Analysis, Chemical Kenetics and Photochemistry, and a Reference Solar Spectral Irradiance for use in a Atmospheric Modeling It should be stressed that this is not a consensus document. If more than one conclusion could be maintained by the scientific data, then both of these conclusions have been quoted. It is, aft all, a significant test of the present state-of-knowledge if more than one scientific conclusion can be drawn from the same experimental data. The stratosphere is the second major layer of Earth's atmosphere, just above the troposphere, and below the mesosphere. The stratosphere is stratified (layered) in temperature, with warmer layers higher and cooler layers closer to the Earth; this increase of temperature with altitude is a result of the absorption of the Sun's ultraviolet radiation by the ozone layer. This is in contrast to the troposphere, near the Earth's surface, where temperature decreases with altitude. The border between the troposphere and stratosphere, the tropopause, marks where this temperature inversion begins. Near the equator, the lower edge of the stratosphere is as high as 20 km (66,000 ft; 12 mi), at midlatitudes around 10 km (33,000 ft; 6.2 mi), and at the poles about 7 km (23,000 ft; 4.3 mi) Temperatures range from an average of 51 °C ( 60 °F; 220 K) near the tropopause to an average of 15 °C (5.0 °F; 260 K) near the mesosphere.[6] Stratospheric temperatures also vary within the stratosphere as the seasons change, reaching particularly low temperatures in the polar night (winter). Winds in the stratosphere can far exceed those in the troposphere, reaching near 60 m/s (220 km/h; 130 mph) in the Southern polar vortex.

1p. on Sergievsky's personal letterhead. 8vo. A letter written by the renowned Russian ace and world record setting Sikorsky test pilot, on behalf of Danish-born ballet and Broadway dancer, Paul Haakon, considered by many to be one of greatest ballet dancers of the 20th century. Reading in part: "I have known Paul Haakon Longreen for over sixteen years. In the theatrical profession he is known under the name of Paul Haakon. It is very well known that he is one of the best dancers in the world. He gave up his dancing recently to become a flying instructor, purely to serve his country. I sincerely believe that anything which could be done to facilitate his joining the United States Army Air Force reserve would benefit our war effort." Despite Sergievsky's recommendation in our letter, it seems Haakon never became a combat pilot during WWII, and instead toured as an entertainer with the United Service Organizations. He died in New York, in 1992. Old folds, lower right hand corner chipped not affecting text or signature, otherwise a fine letter with a bold, clear signature 1p. on Sergievsky's personal letterhead. 8vo.

In den WarenkorbONE: Mimeographed typed document titled 'Zambianization of the Air Traffic Services Division of the Department of Civil Aviation'. 7pp., foolscap 8vo, with eighth page carrying table of contents. Undated [mid 1960s]. Given that the plans accompanying this item are initialed by Helm, it seems reasonable to assume that this report is also his work. It begins with a 'Statement of Government Policy' ('Since gaining Independence in 1964 a total of 13 Zambian students have been recruited and are in various stages of training'), and including sections on 'Recruitment and Selection of Zambian students', 'Master Plan for Zambianization training', 'Instructional staff' and 'Synthetic training aids'. With three charts drawn out by Helm on graph paper: 'Chart No 1: A.T.S. Personnel - D.C.A. October 1967' (31 x 22cm.), 'Chart No 2: Master Plan for Zambianization A.T.C.O. Training | Period Seven Years' (48 x 63cm.) and 'Chart No 4 | School of Air Traffic Control - Model Layout' (26 x 62cm.), the last two both dated by Helm 'R. F. H. 23. 10. 67 [23 October 1967]'. TWO: Mimeographed typed plan of 'COURSE NO. 2 [3, 4] | ELEMENTARY AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL COURSE | AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL'. 16pp., foolscap 8vo. Paginated 16-31. Undated [1950s?]. With reference to ICAO. THREE: 'Chapter 3 - Interlude in Canada'. Autograph account (27pp., 8vo) by Helm, describing his difficulty in gaining employment on moving to Canada in 1956. After failing to gain work at Trans-Canada Airlines he is interviewed in a Montreal Social Security Office by a 'grizzled Canadian' who informs him that he has 'quite a job ahead of you! It's not going to be easy; for a start you're too specialised and it will be difficult at your age to break into something else - but - should you find an opening that wants what you've got you'll be in in a big way. On the other hand most Canadian employers just won't offer you lower paid job and you can't blame them; they know you won't be satisfied with what they'll pay & you'll be looking around all the time for something else'. In the following days he is interviewed by 'B.O.A.C., C.P.R., Northern Electric & Rolls Royce. Only Northern Electric who were operating a contract to supply stations on the D.E.W. line was interested. As they were an American organization the matter had to be referred to New York & this meant that some time would elapse before I heard anything. One thing I did find out: it was far easier to get in to see the "top man" in Canada than in England.' At the end of three weeks Helm 'was getting depressed & so I decided to play the one card I had kept up my sleeve. Without telling Joyce [Helm's wife] I visited the headquarters of the International Civil Aviation . Two years earlier I had applied to this organisation for an appointment with their Technical Assistance Bureau and my application was still on file.' FOUR: 'Chapter 4 - The Job'. Autograph description (6pp., 8vo) by Helm of how the ICAO 'fitted in with the United Nations Organization' at the time of his employment in 1956. Concludes: 'My work was to serve with the ICAO Mission in Tehran and to train Iranian Air Traffic Control Staff [.] The contract which I had signed was for a period of one year & was renewable for periods of up to one year.' FIVE: Certificate (1p., 8vo) from the Institute of Navigation, signed by M. W. Richey, Executive Secretary, informing Helm that he has been elected to Membership of the Institute of Navigation, at the Royal Georgraphical Society, London. Helm's promotion on 3 September 1940 to the rank of Flying Officer (41020) is recorded in the London Gazette, 15 October 1940.

Soft cover. Very good. 2 maps. 1 printed on photo paper and one that appears to be a photographic negative. Negative has old red tape on edges. Size 13.5 x 31 Inches. This is a set of 2 Fairey Aviation Company proof maps of the world air-speed record flight of the Fairey Delta 2 - here in their only known examples. During this flight, on October 6, 1954, the Delta 2 broke the world speed record, becoming the first aircraft to fly over 1,000 mph in level flight. A Closer Look The map depicts the Delta 2's course around southern England on its successful world record flight. A black line illustrates the Delta 2's course and direction from Boscombe Down, with circles marking time checks from takeoff and altitude. The points where the afterburners were engaged are indicated as 'reheat on'. Towns in the vicinity are labeled, including Brighton, Portsmouth, and Bournemouth. A printed signature by the pilot, Peter Twiss (1921 - 2011), appears below the title. The Record-Breaking Flight of the Fairey Delta 2 On October 6, 1954, Pariey Aviation Company test pilot Peter Twiss sat in the cockpit of the Fairey Delta 2 ahead of what was going to be the last attempt at breaking the world speed record set the previous year by a U.S. Air Force North American F-100 Super Sabre. The U.K. Ministry of Supply did not support the attempt, believing that aviation was heading away from manned military aircraft in favor of guided missiles. Curiously, Rolls-Royce (which built the Delta 2's engine) also decided not to support the attempt to break the record. Fairey went ahead with the attempt without the government's support, renting the aircraft from the Royal Air Force and financing its own insurance. The weather had been uncooperative for the first half of the week, and technical issues plagued most of the attempts once the weather finally cleared. It was not until the final flight on Friday afternoon that Fairey succeeded. The Delta 2 reached a speed of 1,132 mph, 310 mph above the previous record, making it the first aircraft to exceed 1,000 mph in level flight. The Delta 2 held the record until December 12, 1957, when it was broken by a U.S. Air Force McDonnell JF-101A Voodoo. Publication History and Census These maps were published by the Fairey Aviation Company Flight Development Department c. 1956. Both maps feature identical content and bear indications that they are proofs - such as manuscript highlighting and white-on-black printing. They are the only known surviving examples, suggesting that the map never went into mass production. References: Twiss, P. Faster Than The Sun (London: Grub Street) 2005.

In den WarenkorbSuperbly detailed visual record of the RAF's central logistical hub for the Middle East theatre, serving the region from Egypt to the Hejaz. The depot offered complete servicing from erection out of the crate to scrapping after strike off. Images include personnel groups, exteriors and interiors of workshops, warehouses, hangars, and auxiliary buildings: a complete survey of the staffing and facilities of the complex. The prints are of striking quality, the images sharply focussed and crisply printed, rewarding close examination under a lens with a wealth of detail. Perhaps the most arresting photographically are the shots of the storage spaces, unoccupied aisles extending into the distance filled with fastidiously ordered ranks of parts; a touch uncanny but effectively evocative of scale and rigorous organization. Based at RAF Aboukir (Abu Qir) near Alexandria X AD was the largest such facility in the region, part of a complex including an airfield, home base for a flight school and several training squadrons - craft where identified, Nieuports and SE-5s, bear tail numbers assigned to regional trainers - all of which continued in use until the end of WWII. The present copy is uncaptioned but comparison with records of the two copies traced through auction - the only others found - it is possible to identify a number of the images: various groups of personnel, HQ staff, carpenters, fitters, stores staff, football and gymnastics teams; the headquarters buildings; tool stores; the contents of the parts stores encompassing small fabric pieces, aircraft fittings, spare wings and planes, motor, machine-gun, engine, and balloon spares; the depot's motor transport vehicles, mainly Crossley tenders; the base tennis courts; the engine-erecting shop; outdoor engine testing; hangars; the riggers' shop, dismantling shop, dope shop, and salvage hangar. Landscape album (195 x 260 mm), containing 66 original official gelatine silver prints including title page (100 x 155 mm), some with light sepia toning, mounted on 34 leaves of greyish yellow light card. Cord sewn into greyish yellow light card wraps. Covers worn, creased and stained, with some areas of loss to the extremities; but the contents clean and sound, the photographs themselves crisply defined and with great tone; very good.

Very good. Repaired tears on verso. Blank on verso. Size 23 x 31 Inches. A rare aviation-themed chromolithograph game board highlighting the global fascination with aviation int the early 20th century. This is an extremely rare c. 1912 Léon Saussine pictorial map or game board of an airplane voyage around the world. The map serves as the board for a jeu de parcours (journey game), which snakes around the world, beginning and ending in France. Along the route, vignettes of adventures (and misadventures) decorate the board. Several present problems, including getting tangled in telegraph lines, crashing in the sea, and suffering a mid-air collision. Others depict the highlights: the pyramids at Giza, exotic landscapes, and harassing a farmer and his sheep. A steam locomotive appears in one of the vignettes. The adventure (and the game) ends back in France, with a view of the Eiffel Tower. Chromolithography Chromolithography is a color lithographic technique developed in the mid-19th century. The process involved using multiple lithographic stones, one for each color, to yield a rich composite effect. Oftentimes, the process would start with a black basecoat upon which subsequent colors were layered. Some chromolithographs used 30 or more separate lithographic stones to achieve the desired product. Chromolithograph color could also be effectively blended for even more dramatic results. The process became extremely popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when it emerged as the dominate method of color printing. The vivid color chromolithography produced made it exceptionally effective for advertising and propaganda imagery. Publication History and Census The map/game was published by Léon Saussine, founder of Jeux Saussine (Saussine Games) in Paris around 1900. We have been unable to locate any examples in institutional collections. A rare opportunity.
