The recipient is not named, but the item is from the papers of Lady Maria Theresa Lewis, and the letter is written to her first husband, the novelist Thomas Henry Lister (1800-1842), whose father Thomas Lister of Armitage Park was a childhood friend of Cary's (see his 1847 biography by his son). The present item begins 'My dear Sir, / I construed your silence just as you have explain'd it to me; and was as sure you were doing all you could for me, as if you had told me so while you were doing it. The favour you have been the means of my obtaining is on may accounts prized by me very highly. It places the last of my boys who was without employment, in a situation extremely well suited to him, and in some measure under your superintendence and control; and it comes to me through the medium of yourself the son of my earliest friend, and of Lord John Russell, a statesman whom I sincerely honour. / I am, dear Sir, / ever faithfully your's / H. Photograph of Russell beneath title, alongside 'Sonnet | To W. Clark Russell', reprinted 'From "English Sea Pictures." By Julia D. Young, Author of "Barham Beach, the President's Poem." - New York.' The author laments that '[i]n this country, it is not the fashion to ennoble those who really do something for their time and generation', such as Russell, whose 'stupendous output' consists of 'fifty-seven books everyone [sic] of them good'. The article concludes: 'Of a surety is such a hero a national asset, and the more we think of the subject, the greater is our admiration for that skipper of Calcutta, who first called our attention to the fact. May the fates be kinder to the stricken writer, and may he long be spared to wield his able pen. The nation can better spare many more-advertised and gaudily-decorated patriots, than can it Mr. W. Clark Russell - a citizen of the universal world.' No other copy of this offprint traced, either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC.…

Hegira: 1296 = Gregorian: 1879. was an Ottoman journalist, author, translator and publisher during the Tanzimat period. In his works, he was known as Ahmet Mithat Efendi, to distinguish him from the contemporary politician Midhat Pasha. Ahmet Mithat Efendi took his name from Ahmed Sefik Midhat Pasha, as he worked for a time as an official and newspaper editor in Midhat Pasha's Vilayet of the Danube. Politically, his orientation was more conservative, compared to writers such as Namık Kemal. He was a prolific writer, more than 250 of his works have survived. From 1878 on, he published the newspaper Tercüman-i Hakikat (Interpreter of Truth). His editorship and publication of Olga Lebedeva's translations of Russian literature into Turkish served as an introduction of Tolstoy, Lermontov and Pushkin to Turkey's readership. In addition, he was a patron and teacher to Fatma Aliye, one of the most famous female Ottoman authors. (Source: Wikipedia). In this book, Ahmet Mithat describes how important it is to correct the economic backwardness of the Ottoman Empire and to "work" to save people from the economic collapse.
