An approving testimonial: 'The Revd. Robert Hutchison, who is a candidate for the Head mastership of Bath College, was my pupil during his residence as an Undergraduate at Exeter College Oxford, and I have much pleasure in certifying to the high charater he bore for industry and good behaviour during that period. He was Scholar of the College, and his scholarship was good and sound, as he proved by getting a First Class in Moderations. As I was one of the examiners on that occasion, I can add that his position in that class was decidedly a good one.'.

In den WarenkorbFor information on Cook see his biography in the Oxford DNB, which points out that the subtlety of his later fiction was lost on his contemporaries, being written in a style that 'was not sufficiently sensational' for the period. The present item is the complete text of the last thing Cook ever wrote: a story which appeared in the weeks following his death, in Hood's Comic Annual for 1884 (London, 1883). On 3 November 1883, the 'Bookseller' quoted the review of the volume in the magazine 'Fun': 'a melancholy interest attaches to the article "Columbines all of a Row," from the fact that it was the last production of the late Mr. Dutton Cook, having been completed only a few days before his death'. The Graphic praised the story's 'charming intermingling of pathos and humour'. 12pp, landscape 12mo. The holograph is written in a close, stylized hand, in purple ink, on twelve 11.5 x 18 cm leaves attached with a brass stud. In good condition, lightly aged. Addressed in autograph at top-right of first page: 'Dutton Cook / 69 Gloucester Crescent. N.W', and signed at end 'Dutton Cook'. With autograph emendations throughout, but evidently a final draft: the tenth and eleventh leaves have both been divided into two parts with neat vertical cutting, and reunited on the reverse with paper labels, with the section created by this division indicated by numbering in another hand in pencil in the margins. The story is divided by Cook into nine parts with roman numerals.

At the foot of the letter Halstead has written, in a sprawling hand, with smudged signature, 'Perhaps the will serve. | M. Halstead'. Pinned to the letter is the calling card of 'Mr. Murat Halstead.', with his signature 'M. Halstead' (again slightly smudged) beneath the name. Both items are lightly-aged, but good. Accompanying the letter is an engraving of Halstead by Arthur Jule Goodman, 1890. It is in good condition, neatly attached to a paper mount.

In den Warenkorb4pp, 4to. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged, with thin strip of paper from mount adhering to reverse of second leaf, which is addressed by Wadd, with his seal in red wax (the breaking of which has caused slight loss to a couple of words), to 'Henry Dewey Esqr | Surgeon | King Street | Yarmouth | Norfolk'. The recipient is in fact the surgeon Henry William Robert Davey (1798-1870) of Yarmouth, son of surgeon Henry Sallows Davey (1781-1855) of Beccles. An interesting letter, casting light on print and autograph collecting in Georgian London. (Wadd was the author of 'Nugæ Chirurgicæ, or a Biographical Miscellany illustrative of a Collection of Professional Portraits', 1824.) Wadd begins the letter by stating that he has 'great pleasure' in assisting Davey in his 'pursuits'. He continues: 'If you were in town I could easily put you in the way of increasing your collection. There are several print-sellers I have employed one in particular of the name of Smith [William Smith senior], of Lisle Street Leicester Square, who is an honest dealer and would I have no doubt send you anything he had. There are a great many prints at low prices it is only when they are fine or scarce that they are valuable Then some that cannot be purchased. Smith has them in Classes and arranged Alphabetically. The price is written in pencil on the back and for ready money a deduction is made.' If Davey sends him a list of the prints he is after, Wadd will make enquiries and let Davey know, 'that you may have your own discretion in the purchase'. Wadd has sent 'a few Autographs which are all I can put my hand upon at present'; if these suit Davey's purpose he will send others, 'and as I am a collector myself, you can perhaps help me my collection in this way is Universal'. Regarding his best-known work, published the year before, Wadd writes: 'The "Nugae" was begun as a catalogue for my private use and the "Memorabilia" at the End was an after thought, for the purpose of selling a few for when all is done in the [joke?] will cost me upwards of £50 as o[nly] 250 copies were printed which will not pay expences. If I re-publish them I shall make them more entertaining & I hope more profitable.' Wadd concludes by asking Davey to '[d]irect anything you may send to me under cover to my friend Mr. [Chas.] Johnson of the Post Office as his frank carries my weight & I have permission for [the] purpose.' From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.

In den Warenkorb4pp., 4to. On two loose leaves of Whatman paper, each watermarked 1827. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. The document begins with the following note, dated and signed by Roby: 'The following ballad from my forthcoming "Traditions of Lancashire," though not of much value in itself, may yet acquire some, from its connexion with, and introduction into Mrs. Thelwall's elegant volume of Scraps.' (The implication that the two leaves have been removed from Mrs Thelwall's album is supported by pagination from 12 to 15.) Sixty-four lines, divided into sixteen four-line stanzas. This version only differs in one instance from that published two years later in Roby's 'Traditions of Lancashire': the fifty-seventh line in the published version - 'The moon looks bright on Rudolph's towers,' reads, in this version, 'The moon looks bright o'er Speke's grey towers,'. The recipient is more likely to be the wife of John Thelwall, than that of his son Algernon Sydney Thelwall, Georgiana Ann (née Tahourdin).

Zustand: Very good. Broadsheet (354 x 235 mm) with contemporary hand-coloring (several wormholes in the face of the robber and one above his head; portion of the paper on upper right defective, just touching text), affixed at upper corners to a sheet of modern paper. DRAMATIC ILLUSTRATION OF THE STRANGE TALE OF YABUHARA KENGYO, a villainous blind masseur / accupuncturist who was the subject of many Japanese folktales of the 19th-20th century. It is thought that he is based on some historical personage, but this has never been verified. The story goes that he killed his teacher and devoted himself to a life of crime. Here the evil Yabuhara, with an acupuncture needle in his mouth, having untied the victim's belt, rustles through the poor peddler's clothes seeking valuables. THE LEGEND: This fiendish blind masseur was originally named Sugi no Ichi. He kills a peddler in the mountains of Hakone and steals his money. The murderer also kills his teacher (Yabuhara Kengyo I) and then succeeds to his master's name as Yabuhara Kengyo II. He becomes a moneylender and becomes involved with the teacher's wife and so on. In our print, a statue of Jizo, protector of souls of deceased children, can be discerned on the far right, illuminated by lightning which flashes against the black night sky; the small stone that are piled up in front of it refer to the Sisyphean labors that these poor souls are condemned to do: stack stones on top of each other for all eternity, while demons gleefully knock them down. Jizo is also the protector of wayfaring travelers, which is curious because the victim of the present scene was himself a wayfarer! Perhaps the artist is implying that, having chosen a holy place for such crime, Yabuhara will be headed straight to hell. Our print of the Yabuhara story is from a series based upon popular kodan, or oral narratives. The kodan were often drawn from actual historical events that raconteurs spun into captivating narratives. The print names Ichiryusai Bunsha as the kodan who told this story, probably Ichiryusai Bunsha II (d. 1881). The author of the text itself, Kanagaki Robun, was a very popular writer during this period. Here he took the kodan account of the crime and gave it a literary polish. His extraordinary text reads: "A roll of thunder struck the peddler / street performer with terror, causing him to lose his breath in the mountains around Hakone. While traveling, it is good to have a companion to share the road, and the [blind] man who joined him on this journey also offered kindly [medical] treatment. But he was blinded by avarice, turning all to darkness before his eyes. He groped about, searching [his victim's] waistband. The waves lapped the lakeshore, unaware of the serious crime. Rather than "Sai no kawara" [see below]], this man's destination will be to a little hell or a great hell. Ultimately, he will be brought before the register of Enma, lord of the underworld, and once placed before the mirror of judgment, the sins of this blind man will become clear." NOTE: "Sai no kawara" is the name of the riverbank in the underworld where deceased children are condemned to limbo and where the bodhisattva Jizo (Ksitigarbha) protects their souls. We are grateful to Matthew Fraleigh for his translation and research.
