In den WarenkorbSullivan and Edward Compton have entries in the Oxford DNB, and Compton's wife Viriginia is noticed in the entry for her father Hezekiah Linthicum Bateman. The fourth signatory of this item Lewis Ball appears to have also had theatrical connections. From the collection of nationalist autographs of Miss Burgess of Norwich. From the autograph collection of Miss Burgess of Norwich. 1p, 12mo. On leaf of pink gilt-edged paper torn from autograph album, the lead content of which has resulted in some discolouration: lightly worn and aged, with dink to one corner. Sullivan's autograph stands alone on one side: 'We are sons of Sister Isles / Englishmen and Irishmen, / On our friendship heaven smiles, / Tyrant tricks and tory wiles / Ne'er shall make us foes again. / T. D. Sullivan / July 15th. '93.' Sullivan's signature is striking, with the cross stroke on the initial letter T rising over the signature like the outline of a mountain. The reverse of the leaf carries three signatures. First: 'Very sincerely yours / Virginia Bateman Compton / Jan 5th. 1893' Second: ' "People who never enter a Theatre are always the first to condemn it!" ("Davy Garrick") / Edward Compton / Norwich / Jan 5/93.' Third: 'Lewis Ball / "I leave my Character behind me" / (School for Scandal / Janry. 6th./93'. See Image (T.D. Sullivan).

He recalls their previous meeting: 'last time was on a Sunday morning, when Theodore & I trotted from Belvedere to Sidcup [.] he, like you, has been following his father's footsteps, & has made somewhat of a name in economic edntomology'. He has shown Lester's letter to his wife, who was 'delighted to see it for the sake of your mother, who, as you may recollect, was a great ally of hers'. He wishes he could be with Lester's father, never having had the luck to see India, despite having 'always hankered to do so'. "In the last Report you will find a list of such publications on Dante or his works as have been made in America, which I truct may be useful to you. The 'Concordance' of which I sent you the specimen pages is advancing well, and will, if we can get it published, be a great boon to the most constant students of the D.C. | You have indertaken a great task [word crossed out] , and one of slow accomplishment. If carried out according to your intention it will be of prime value, superseding other commentaries, a perpetual commentary in itself. | I shall have the pleasure of sending to you before long a copy of a Catalogue now in preparation of the collection of books relating to Dante in the Library of Harvard I have given a large part of my own collection to the Library, and intend that the whole of it should ultimately go there; and, though there are still numerous gaps to be filled, the list will show that we have a tolerable supply of the material for a critical study of the works and life of the Poet, and of what has been writtem about them. | I shall hope to see your paper in the 'Century' before long. An engarving from the portrait in the Codex 1040 in the Riccardi Library would be of great interest. | I send you one of the last remaining copies of a tract [NOT present] which I printed many years since, and which, if you have not happened to see it, may afford you some amusement." In den WarenkorbSullivan, Webb and Mangan all have entries in the Oxford DNB. The present item is referred to in a letter of 18 January 1890 (offered separately), where Webb explains that he is sending it to 'Miss Burgess' (of Norwich), with three other Irish nationalist autographs, describing it as 'unsigned but vouched by me'). 1p, 4to. In fair condition, lightly aged. Folded four times. Sullivan's text, covering almost the whole of the page and written with the skill of an editor, is an autograph draft, with corrections, of a newspaper appeal for subscriptions, headed 'Memorial to the Poet James Clarence Mangan.' Twenty-four lines. Webb vouches at the foot of the page: '[The Lord Mayor T. D. Sullivan MP October 1887] / Alfred Webb'. On the reverse of the leaf, in Miss Burgess's distinctive hand: 'Written by the Lord Mayor of Dublin J. D. Sullivan Oct/87'. Begins: 'Amongst some of the admirers of the genius of one of the sweetest singers of the Irish Race - the gifted James Clarence Mangan - the idea has been started of honouring his memory by affixing to the front of the house in which he was born a Memorial Tablet with a suitable inscription recording the dates of his birth and death, and bearing, if it be found feasible to produce it, a medallion likeness of the poet.' Among the three emendations is the alteration of the 'natives' of Dublin to 'inhabitants'. See partial image.

8vo. Together 3 pp. on 2 bifolia. One with autograph address. To the editor of the Boston Traveller: "I send you the promised Christmas story to-day. I had to make it a little longer than I intended; these things get the better of me sometimes, but I suppose you will not object to this sort of fault. If you need it condensed however, be so kind as to let me do it. I don't like to have anyone else tinker my work: do you? [.]" (14 Nov. 1882). - To a Pittsfield lady, sending her a shad, or Alosa herring: "This is to introduce Mr. S. Shad: a Finnish gentleman whom I hear you have never met. He is a person of old family, though rather scaly; but he has always been in the swim; he has explored unknown depths, and has a great deal of Attic salt in his constitution, and much good taste. He needs to be accomodated with a cold bath all night, and martyred like St. Anthony in the morning. If you should alleviate his woes then with the crême de la crême, or even the milk of human unkindness, poured upon his cremated body, you will find him grateful (to the palate) [.] I trust you will be able to recommend him to Pittsfield society, as he has long been an important constituent of the Connecticut legislature [.]". - Each with 2 small strips of old mounting tape on verso. The letter of 1882 a little brownstained.
