Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Hobson, Charles (illustrator). Limited Edition. No. 5 of 39 copioes, folio size, 11 pp., signed by Roger Angell and Charles Hobson, with TLS. For those touched by a love of sailing and the sea, this work, masterfully blending Angell's essay with Hobson's design, personifies that love and makes it touchable. The text is an essay by Roger Angell (b. 1920), award-winning writer of mainly sports literature (he has been referred to as the "Poet Laureate of baseball ") and a regular contributer to The New Yorker. Charles Hobson, book artist extraordinaire, has incorporated into his design old maritime charts of Maine, overhead views of islands based on those provided by Google Earth, model sails and rigging, and a pastel of a baseball cap (the BoSox, of course) signed by him beneath. Includes a TLS from Hobson to the original owner of the book loosely laid in, dated July 28, 2009, wherein he walks the recipient through the book pointing out salient features - for example, he writes "a chart is sewn into the following two pages to show the sites of Roger Angell's winter-night-thinking about rock-strewn waters near his home and the White Island adventure with a bottle of Scotch and a Sox game". ___DESCRIPTION: Accordion-style book encased in a hard binding, the final page only being tipped-in at its fore-edge to the rear board, title page has a small chart which can be unfolded, incorporated through the book are a jib, another chart, and model boat main and jib; type Times New Roman, printed letterpress, folio size (approximately 15" tall), eleven leaves (each printed only on one side) total with colophon on the last page, a limited edition of 39 copies this being no. 5, signed in pencil by both the author and book artist on the colophon page, Mr. Hobson also signed beneath the pastel of the Red Sox baseball cap. The TLS is nearly a full page, is on Charles Hobson's letterhead, is dated July 28, 2009, and is signed by him in black ink, simply "Charles". The work is encased in a slipcase covered in white sailcloth with navy blue paper labels on the front and spine. ___CONDITION: Fine - all pages crisp and clean, entire work as new; slipcase also fine; TLS is fine with a single original fold. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Hobson, Charles (illustrator). Limited Edition. Number 6 of 34 copies, quarto size, signed by Charles Hobson. This work concerns Charles Hobson's "nearly life long interest in Edgar Degas", and "focuses on his time in Rome as a twenty-three year old when he was just coming into his true power as an artist." In the form of a fictional diary which covers a week in 1857, with imaginary entries and drawings; Beatrice-like, "Rome takes the form of a beautiful woman who escorts Degas to the City's masterpieces" (from prospectus). Each of the five signatures has a design from an actual Degas sketchbook, inserted into a slotted pocket in the back page of each is a card accessed by a ribbon pull, which contains historical and cultural notes relating to the fictional entry; the reverse of each card is a horizontal slice of a Degas self-portrait done in oil on paper in 1857; the pieces can be laid out to form a complete picture of Degas as he looked to himself at the age of 23. Original drawings in the style of Degas have been made by Charles Hobson with pencil on stained or acrylic washed paper and reproduced as high resolution digital prints that in many instances have been accented with handwork. Limited edition of 34 copies, this no. 6, with three items loosely laid in: the four-page prospectus, a TLS to the original owner by Charles Hobson, and a bookmark-shaped printed "Thank you!" with a hand-written personalized short note to the original owner: "Hi - , I hope you like this. All best, Charles". ___DESCRIPTION: Case binding of half brown cloth over marbled boards, a large pencil tipped onto the front board, the binding contains five independent signatures sewn into an 11" x 15" accordion of BFK Rives paper, each signature containing the artwork and cards as described above; lettering in the signatures is Bradley Hand ITC and the type in the introduction and the inserted notecards is Didot. Maps used as part of the work are from the Nolli map of 1748 and would have been available to Degas as he traveled the City in 1857. Contained within a side-drop box covered in matching brown cloth with a map stamped onto the front of the box. Prospectus, TLS, and note loosely laid in as referred to above. ___CONDITION: Fine throughout, as are the prospectus, letter and note, and the box. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Hobson, Charles (illustrator). Limited Edition. Number 35 of 45 copies, quarto size, [19] pp., signed to each plate and to the colophon by Charles Hobson. Edgar Degas (1834-1917) has long been considered one of the greatest of the French impressionists, especially concerning the female body in movement which is given a masterful homage in this intriguing volume. Degas did many monotypes "and in many cases he applied pastel over the ghost version to create a finished piece." Charles Hobson's own masterful pastel and photogravures of the female nude, having a self-proclaimed "lifelong influence" by Degas, are given a loving home beside Degas' words. The text was selected from letters and other material, his words are not only printed typographically on pages facing the plates but overlaid in Degas' actual handwriting to the copper images created by Hobson. ___DESCRIPTION: Original quarter rust-red cloth with Degas' handwriting in facsimile to the cloth in black, hand painted paper covered boards illustrated with a reproduction of a Degas drawing, all edges uncut, concertina binding, eight photogravures; BFK Rives paper, Meridien type, quarto size (11.5" by 7.75"), unpaginated [19] pp., limited edition of 45 copies, this number 35, signed to each plate and to the colophon by Charles Hobson. Housed in a matching cloth slipcase decorated with facsimiles of Degas' writing, a nib pen imprinted with the title is attached to the backstrip. ___CONDITION: Fine copy, like new, in fine slipcase. ___CITATION: "Experiments in Navigation" pp. 30-33. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
