In den WarenkorbSee his entry in the Oxford DNB. ONE: Autograph draft of conclusion of description of his meeting with Mehmet Ali ('Mehemet Ali'). The ODNB states that in July 1836 Cobden produced a pamphlet 'which analysed the Russo-Turkish dispute [.] attempting to play down the Turcophilia that was rife in Britain in the 1830s. In October Cobden embarked on a long tour, sailing via Lisbon, Gibraltar, and Malta to the eastern end of the Mediterranean, as far as Constantinople, meeting Mehmet Ali in Egypt, before returning via Greece in April 1837.' The present text is the conclusion of the draft manuscript of the account he gave of that meeting and had published in Tait's Edinburgh Magazine in November 1838. 1p, foolscap 8vo. The page is headed '20' and carries ten lines of text, one and a half lines of which are deleted. Lightly aged, worn and creased. On reverse, in pencil, in a contemporary hand: 'Cobden / M. S. S His work in Turkey'. The text reads (with deleted passage in square brackets): 'Often in recurring to my interview with this extraordinary man, [- the spring-like elasticity of whose mind evinces its power in proportion as it is pressed -] and recollecting the eagerness of his enquiries upon practical subjects, - as well as the vehemence of manner with which he sustained his opinions - evincing the spring-like elasticity of mind which manifests its power in proportion as it is pressed - I think with pleasure of the refreshing & animating scene, not unmixed with regret that I shall probably never again have the opportunity of chatting with old Mehemet Ali'. TWO: Slip of paper cut from the beginning of a letter in the third person, with reverse blank. In fair condition, lightly aged. Reads: 'Mr Cobden presents his compliments to Mr Cornwall Lewis, & begs to forward for presentation to the Lords of the Treasury, a memorial'. THREE: Printed form response with thick black border. 1p, 32mo. In fair condition, on discoloured paper. Reads (with manuscript text in square brackets): '[Mr & Mrs Cobden] return thanks for the favor of [Mr Smiths] kind enquiries. / [Midhurst 20 June 1856]'. The poem is neatly written out, in a sensitive hand, and is eight lines long: 'Fairyland! Fairyland! | That must be a pleasant spot: | Silver rippled over the strand, | Murmurs in each cave & grot, | Jewelled fruits upon the trees, | Music floating on the air, | Perfumes breathing on the breeze -, | How I wish that I was there! | [signed] Julia S. In den Warenkorb3pp., 4to. Bifolium. 57 lines. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed, on reverse of second leaf, to 'William W. Greenough | Andover | Massachusetts', with circular postmark in red ink and remains of red wax seal. Regarding 'the article on Bosworth's Anglo-Sax. Dict.', Henry writes: 'From the few first pages that I have read & the glance that I have given at the rest, I am satisfied that I shall be glad to print your article. But it is impossible, on account of the handwriting, to print it in its present state.' Henry is 'quite sure no compositor in the office can make it all out [.] The piece, you know, abounds with Saxon words & with unusual names of places, authors, &c - and to read the handwriting accurately requires a greater familiarity with the subject than I possess. | In writing for a review the handwriting should, in all cases, be plainer than yours [.] There is another difficulty. I do not know whether I shall not find a difficulty in getting Saxon type.' He suggests 'three ways of getting along in this case', the second being for Greenough 'to be here yourself for a couple of days to correct the press'. Whatever course was adopted, Greenough's article was published in the New York Review in 1838.…

In den Warenkorb4to, 3 pp. In a bifolium. 52 lines of neatly-written text. Clear and complete. Very good on lightly-aged and creased paper. Part of the second leaf has been cut away on the breaking open of the letter, and is now under the seal, with no loss of text. The seal is cracked, with a light imprint of Boucher's monogram beneath a jester's head. The letter concerns the enclosure of the Langtoft Estate and 'Mr. Bankes', who 'never had any Legal Right to interfere in the Business'. Norton's last letter has made Boucher 'very uneasy', as he declines 'to have any more to do with my unfortunate Concerns in your Neighbourhood'. 'Whatever may have been the Case with You, I have been too long blind, but my Eyes have now been opened.' Declares himself pleased with 'Mr. Gee, who appears to be a plain well-disposed honest Man: &, notwithstanding Mrs. Banks's Insinuations to the Contrary, I do assure You, when I fairly put the Question, He honestly said, if He might chuse, Mr. Norton was the Man whom, above all others, He should like, & did wish, to be my Agent.' Tells him not to 'send in your Accts. till the whole of the Buildings is compleated'. See Image.…
