This volume captures photographs of a number of Victorian commercial buildings and residences in downtown Austin. It includes several mansions that were demolished in the early 1970s (e.g. the Shot Tower, the Butler house, the Houghton house). Those demolitions galvanized the community to push for Austin's first historic preservation ordinance.

Contains over 260 photographs with connecting text-a history of the first 100 years of the capital city of Texas. The foundational photographic collection on which dozens of other "coffee-table" Austin books have since been based.

144pp, photographs, images, brown paper covers. The contents are in very good condition, with a little foxing to the front endpaper and a little water staining to the rear pages. The covers are in good condition, they are a little water stained, with a couple of closed tears to the right edge and a small open tear to the bottom of the front cover with a small pen mark noted. There is a little wear to the bottom of the spine and exposure of the binding half way down. An uncommon historical record of the Gloucester Journal with 'reminiscences by the staff, tributes by public men, and newspaper appreciations'.
