Cloth, G. 676pp, photogravure frontis, index, both hinges crudely repaired ( at the gutter between the half title & frontis & to the index ) with fabric tape which although unslightly has done the job admirably, cloth bright with a little bumping to the corners & a small split to the cloth at the base of the spine. endpapers yellowed & fore edges foxed. Thanks to the tape a solid reading copy. An account of Sir Austen Chamberlain's time as one of the few remaining Liberal Unionists after the disasterous 1906 General Election which saw many of the Conservative & Liberal Unionisst MPs ousted from their seats. The account takes the form of letters which Chamberlain wrote home, so that his father, Joseph Chamberlain, who had recently retired from politics due to ill health, could be kept abreast of the political scene. It was through his son that the stricken elder Chamberlain tried to prolong his Parimentary career, particularly in regard to Tariff Reform.

Hardcover. Zustand: good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: poor. Presumed First Edition. x, [2], 13-95, [1] pages. Includes Forward by Austen Chamberlain. DJ worn and torn into two pieces. Published on the occasion of The King's Jubilee, this book is based on the same named Pathe film. More than eighty representative occasions and incidents of the Reign are finely illustrated in photogravure. The book is compiled by Sir Austen Chamberlain, who assisted in the selection of extracts from contemporary news-reels for the composition of the film. In book form, this valuable survey becomes a permanent record of the changing life of England through one of the most momentous quarter-centuries of her history. George V (George Frederick Ernest Albert; 3 June 1865 - 20 January 1936) was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 6 May 1910 until his death in 1936. Born during the reign of his grandmother Queen Victoria, George was third in the line of succession. From 1877 to 1891, George served in the Royal Navy. On the death of Victoria in 1901, George was created Prince of Wales. He became king-emperor on his father's death in 1910. George V's reign saw the rise of socialism, communism, fascism, Irish republicanism, and the Indian independence movement, radically changed the political landscape of the British Empire. The Parliament Act 1911 established the supremacy of the elected British House of Commons over the House of Lords. As a result of the WWI, the British Empire expanded to its greatest effective extent. In 1917, George became the first monarch of the House of Windsor, which he renamed from the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Sir Joseph Austen Chamberlain KG (16 October 1863 - 16 March 1937) was a British statesman, son of Joseph Chamberlain and older half-brother of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. He served as Chancellor of the Exchequer (twice) and was briefly Conservative Party leader before serving as Foreign Secretary. Brought up to be the political heir of his father, whom he physically resembled, he was elected to Parliament as a Liberal Unionist at a by-election in 1892, and held office in the Unionist coalition governments of 1895-1905, remaining in the Cabinet as Chancellor of the Exchequer (1903-05) after his father resigned in 1903 to campaign for Tariff Reform. After his father's disabling stroke in 1906 Austen became the leading tariff reformer in the House of Commons. Chamberlain returned to office in H. H. Asquith's wartime coalition government in May 1915, as Secretary of State for India, but resigned to take responsibility for the disastrous Kut Campaign. He again returned to office in David Lloyd George's coalition government, once again serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer. He then served as Conservative Party leader in the Commons (1921-2). Like many leading coalitionists, he did not hold office in the Conservative governments of 1922-4. By now regarded as an elder statesman, he served an important term as Foreign Secretary in Stanley Baldwin's Second Government (1924-9), during which he negotiated the Locarno Pact (1925), aimed at preventing war between France and Germany, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He last held office as First Lord of the Admiralty in 1931. He was one of the few MPs supporting Winston Churchill's appeals for rearmament against the German threat in the 1930s, and remained an active backbench MP until his death in 1937.
