DJ is in a plastic sleeve. August Valentine Kautz (January 5, 1828 ? September 4, 1895) was a German-American soldier and Union Army cavalry officer dur…ing the American Civil War. He was the author of several army manuals on duties and customs eventually adopted by the U.S. military. Promoted to brigadier general of volunteers on April 16, 1864, Kautz led cavalry operations under the command of Maj. Gen. Benjamin Butler during Ulysses S. Grant's campaigns against Richmond and Petersburg between April and June 1864. After the war, Kautz served (from May to June 1865) on the trial board investigating the conspirators involved in the assassination of President Lincoln, before performing service in the southwest frontier, including as the commander of the Department of Arizona and commanding officer of Fort McDowell. He was appointed commander of the Department of the Columbia in 1891 with the rank of brigadier general. A Hand-Book for the Rank and Files of the Army, Showing What are the Rights and Duties, How to Obtain the Former and Perform the Latter, and Thereby Enabling Them to Seek Promotion and Distinction in the Service of Their Country. This was the Civil War soldier's and NCO's "how-to" guide to military duties in garrison and in the field. It covers of all ranks and services: infantry, cavalry, artillery, ordnance, quartermaster, signal, saddlers, hospital stewards, cooks, bands, as well as spies, pickets, expressmen, special forces. There is much quaint yet practical advice on survival, cooking and nutrition, pay, punishment, prisoners of war, and many long-extinct soldier skills. It contains the Articles of War used during the Civil War.
