The Swedish-born American actor and translator Arvid Paulson apologizes for not writing sooner to City Center director Jean Dalrymple, "I became ill arriving in Helsingborg, and the day after arrival in Stockholm - during a violent snowstorm with snow up to the knee - fell down a precipice and injured my leg severely." He goes on to describe the "lovely roomy apartment" he is confined to in the interim and then requests "I wonder whether you are on any committee distributing grants, Jean? If you are and if the group at Huntington (which several years ago gave 30 performances of Hedda Gabler from my translation) should request a grant, it ought not be given until they pay me $400 that they owe me. Our agreement - made over the telephone with Richard Jamieson, the director - was originally for $25 a performance, but when they pleaded insufficient income when the presentation was over, I told them that I would accept $400." Signed "Arvid". Jean Dalrymple has underlined the date and the word "Huntington" and circled the amount in red felt. Fine. The Swedish-born American actor Arvid Paulson (1875-1977) was a translator of the works of August Strindberg. Some of his correspondence and papers as well as his translations of Strindberg are in the New York Public Library's Theatre Collection. There is also material in the collection relating to a proposed exhibit on Strindberg and Ibsen as well as a portion of his unfinished script for a musical about European Jews during the Second World War. The recipient, Jean Dalrymple (1902-1998) was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville, appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing, the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski, Mary Martin, Jos Iturbi, Andre Kostalanetz, Nathan Milstein, and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943, serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951, Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder, commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world.

Fontanne, Lynn (1887-1983)British-born star of the American stage who, together with her American husband Alfred Lunt, formed the most celebrated acting couple in the history of the American theater. Born Lillie Louise Fontanne in Woodford, Essex County, England, on December 6, 1887; died on July 30, 1983; youngest of five daughters of Jules Pierre Antoine Fontanne (a French designer of printing type) and Frances Ellen (Thornley) Fontanne; attended local schools in various parts of London; studied acting under Ellen Terry (1903-05); married Alfred Lunt, Jr., on May 26, 1922; no children.,Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne are widely considered the greatest acting team in the history of American theatre. Not willing to simply coast on their extraordinary natural talent, the Lunts were consummate professionals. Their passion for excellence and commitment to the art of live theatre was legendary, even at the beginning of their careers. By the mid 1920s, Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne were the two most respected, most popular, most critically acclaimed, and highest-paid stage actors in the country. At the height of their individual careers, they made a remarkable decision. They each took enormous pay cuts (from $900 per week to $300 per week) to sign on with The Theatre Guild - a fledgling company dedicated to performing new and avant-garde work - by writers like Ibsen and Shaw. The Lunts believed strongly that creating great theatre with broad impact was far more important than money. But since they were taking such large cuts in salary, they were able to put two clauses into their contracts that would profoundly affect the rest of their lives and careers.
