This circumstance has certainly had a negative impact on the development of knowledge in clinical medicine about cerebral venous disease. Cerebra} venous pathology and its consequence is, however, a frequent problern in clinical neurosur gery, both with regard to operative techniques and conservative manage ment. Therefore, it is not surprising that the initiative to collect, for the first time, data on our present knowledge in basic research of cerebral veins, their structure and function under normal and pathological circumstances, came from clinicians. Regarding the cerebral veins the clinician has primarily in view the dysfunctions originating from embryogenetic malformations, phlebitic obstruction, tumourous shunts, or traumatic lesions. But in addition to that, particular attention should be paid to the microstructure ofthe venous vessel walls, their barrier function, and the venous vasomotor system. Studying these interrelationships has for a long time been both fascinating and of immediate interest to me.…

In this book, democracy is presented as a political system in danger due to its intrinsic flaws and tendency to self-destruction. The major flaw is that ¿human nature¿ is not adequately considered in democracy¿s conception: its citizens, ¿We, the people¿, as individuals and as crowds, are liberated into a dangerous ideology prioritizing ¿freedom from society¿ over ¿membership in society¿ and thereby causing decline in libertinism, hedonism and polarization in divided and finally broken societies. Proposals to resolve the rapidly growing crisis include education of citizens into the ethics of reciprocal altruism, grounded in evidence from biological sciences and humanities, professionalization of politics, and a fundamental change of politics towards evidence-based decision-making, thus ending politicking, politicians' personality affairs, and the cold war of political parties, the representative of class warfare in the sheep-skin of ¿interest-group pluralism¿. The author uses his background in human biology and psychology to discuss the relevance of philosophical and politological issues around democracy raised in past and recent literature, and to highlight the prospects of using scientific knowledge for evidence-based socialization of the "human factor". …

Der Autor untersucht die inhärenten Schwächen liberaler repräsentativer Demokratie, die selbstzerstörerischen Widersprüchlichkeiten in ihrer Ideologie und ihren Strategien. Er diskutiert die rezente europäische und amerikanische Literatur vor allem mit Hinblick auf deren Vorschläge zur Verbesserung der von ihnen sorgenvoll kritisierten Lage der gegenwärtigen demokratischen Systeme. Als eines der Gleitmittel auf der Talfahrt liberaler Demokratie erweist sich das fast völlige Fehlen jeglicher Erziehung in ein Verantwortungsbewusstsein als Bürger einer Gemeinschaft mit dem Verständnis, dass Gemeinschaft nur aus dem besteht, was ihre Mitglieder einbringen. Berücksichtigt man die Tatsache, dass Politik nur ein Spiegel des sozialen Prozesses ist, wird die gegenwärtige politische Misere in vielen Ländern nachgerade selbstverständlich. Schließlich führt diese Untersuchung zu dem Schluss, dass nur der offene Umgang in Erziehung und Politik mit dem 'Faktor Mensch' - seinen evolutionsbedingten Neigungen zu egozentrischem, asozialem Handeln - eine stabile demokratische Gesellschaftsform ermöglicht. Daraus resultiert eine schrittweise umfassende Reform der individuellen Persönlichkeitsentwicklung zu einer Ethik reziproken Altruismus' und der politischen Logistik und Strategie mit evidenzbasierten Entscheidungen und Professionalisierung des Politikerberufs. Diese nationale Form reformierter Demokratie bedingt gleichen Umgang mit Partnerstaaten außen wie mit Bürgern innen.
