Cette version française participa à la diffusion de Werther en France à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, cultivant sa légende et sa portée sentimentale auprès d'un public éclairé. Elle suit fidèlement la structure de l'?uvre originale : une série de lettres relatant les tourments intérieurs et les élans amoureux du jeune Werther, jusqu'à son tragique dénouement. One of the first translations of Werther by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), central figure of the Sturm und Drang movement, then of Weimar classicism. Provided by Philippe-Charles Aubry (1744-1812), this translation is illustrated with 8 engravings outside text. These include the 4 original plates engraved in copperplate by Jean Duplessis-Bertaux (1747-1819) after drawings by Berthon (in first proof before letters) to which has been added a suite of 4 plates by Daniel Chodowiecki (1726-1801) extracted from Charlotte's letters (1787). A bibliophile copy on large vellum paper with exceptional iconography indeed. This French version participated in the dissemination of Werther in France at the end of the 18th century, cultivating its legend and sentimental reach among an enlightened public. It faithfully follows the structure of the original work: a series of letters recounting the interior torments and amorous impulses of young Werther, until his tragic denouement. Introspection, feeling for nature, the impossibility of happy love and despair, are all motifs that would durably nourish Romantic literature and research on the psychology of world-weariness. This early French edition would have its influence on fashion, behaviors and even certain social phenomena of the era, such as the wave of suicides attributed to its emotional impact. Good general condition, however the binding is rubbed and the title and volume labels are absent, a little worm bite on a hinge, corners are blunted, other minor defects.
