Born in 1865, he began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1892, and was still exhibiting there in 1958, the year he died, at the age of ninety-two. He was regarded as something of a mystery man, even to his fellow artists, despite being held in great admiration by many influential collectors during his lifetime, including the royal family. His talent for portraying the common man with an engaging sense of sentiment combined with a meticulous attention for detail remains unsurpassed.
