The first appearance of the famous illustrator's first important work. "In Le Morte D'Arthur Beardsley learnt his job, but the result is no bungling student's work. In den WarenkorbZustand: Good. First edition. First edition, first printing. [vi], 168, 16 pp. Bound in publisher's dark cloth with stamped in white, spine lettered in gilt. Good, binding soiled and worn, stained at bottom corners. Offsetting to endsheets, former owner bookplate to front paste down, inner hinges slightly exposed. Horizontal tear to pp. 87/88 with no loss. An enduringly-popular cosmic horror novella and precursor to weird fiction inspired by the author's upbringing in the Welsh countryside near the Roman ruins at Caerwent. Viewed as degenerate literature it was condemned as decadent and immoral for its frank depictions of sexuality. It would inspire Bram Stoker's Dracula, Lovecraft's The Dunwich Horror, and works by Clark Ashton Smith and Stephen King. Increasingly uncommon.…

Dent's Le Mort D'Arthur, illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley. #367 of 1,000 numbered copies. xxxi, [1], 538 plus limitation page at rear, printed on ivory laid paper. Sixteen-page booklet laid into interior pocket. A beautiful reproduction of one of the most famous editions of The Death of Arthur, written by the 15th century knight Sir Thomas Malory and originally titled The Whole Book of King Arthur and of His Noble Knights of the Round Table. The British publisher J.M. Dent commissioned twenty-year-old Aubrey Beardsley to illustrate a luxurious serialized edition of the medieval classic in 1892, during the height of the Book Beautiful movement. The result made Beardsley a household name for the remainder of his short but brilliant life.…

In den WarenkorbZustand: Near Fine. First Edition. First edition in English of Wilde's seminal one-act tragedy and the first to feature Aubrey Beardsley's lavishly unrestrained illustrations. One of 500 copies. [xii], 67, [1], 16 ads, illustrated with frontispiece, 9 full page plates, and singular tailpiece. Bound in publisher's blue canvas cloth decoratively stamped in gilt after design by Beardsley. Near Fine with light sunning to spine and edges, light foxing to cloth. Offsetting to front endsheets and armorial bookplate to pastedown there, contents lightly tanned. A beautiful copy of a definitive work of the Decadent movement. Composed initially in French, Wilde allegedly intended for Sarah Bernhardt to play Salome in hopes of bypassing strict British censors, although it was inevitably banned by Lord Chamberlain due to the depiction of biblical characters. The play premiered on February 11, 1896, at the Theatre de l'Oeuvre in Paris starring Lina Munte and directed by Lugne-Poe. Rave reviews ensued and later adaptions followed, most notably Richard Strauss' Dresden production which premiered in 1905. The radical work served as a direct affront to Victorian moral standards and cemented the femme fatale archetype for future avant-garde luminaries. Mason 350.…

In den WarenkorbZustand: Near Fine. Limited Edition. Limited edition; number 138 of a limited 300 copies. Bound in publisher's vellum boards elaborately stamped with Beardsley's iconic water lily design over leather spine lettered in gilt. Housed in [original?] card slipcase. Near Fine with light toning and light rubbing to covers, offsetting from plates throughout contents as usual, else Fine. Slipcase lightly worn, toned and with old bookseller catalog entry mounted to one panel. A lavish production featuring eleven omitted Beardsley designs from the first edition of Le Morte Darthur, as well as the designs made for the covers of the parts and a reproduction of the Merlin drawing. The scarce portfolio tailored to be a collector's item produced in response to the success of the previous three editions and subsequent Beardsley craze, as evidenced by the publisher's note, which emphasizes how the book is "distinguished from its predecessors, so far as Beardsley is concerned" due to the three illustrations "which have never before been printed with the Morte Darthur." Produced without text, the work simply exemplifies Beardsley's striking renditions of the Arthurian legend.…
